Download of PC Tools antivirus doesnt work

I just downloaded PC Tools antivirus but when I went to use it the menu shows "computer immunization is disabled " and " intelligaurd protection is off",I know its not my firewall its off, and below it says "system status: Checking" well its been "checking" for that last hour :cry as it is I have "my security shield " attacking my computer and I cant protect it. HELP please
