I have a Dell PC I am using for gaming stuff that still has XP on it. I have drivers that are not working properly but can't get the xp updates now.. this is the error message I get. Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device... I tried downloading driver software off of Major Geeks but it was partial shareware and wouldn't let me use the parts I needed without paying for it. I need to know how I can get these drivers updated .. I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 soon because thats as far as I can go to continue playing these games where they still function... I have a new Laptop and Smartphone for other stuff.. The software I got off of here showed my drivers as up to date... weird. I'm not deep computer savvy.. Can anyone help? I have a Intel (r) Pentium (r) d cpu 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz 2.00 GB Ram

What is the exact full model name of the system, and does the XP OS have Service Pack 3?
Drivers are best obtained from Dell and not via any windows update.
Have a look in Device Manager and tell us the name of the DVD/CD hardware.

I suggest you go to the Dell Support website for your geographical location and put your Service Tag number in from that system to get details of what drivers/downloads are available. If you go to that site with that system it will also carry out diagnostics if you let it.
You didn't answer about what XP OS Service Pack is installed but if it isn't SP3 that's your first critical issue to resolve.

ITS 3.. A couple of guys have made upgrades but I am just too afraid to use them for fear they will crash my system. They have been talked about in PC Magazine, PCWorld and other what I would consider reputable places as being safe..but I still have my own fears. what so you think?

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft retired technical support for Windows XP, including security updates that help protect your PC. (this is from Microsofts official page....therefore you will find nothing on windows download or updates at all )....

I still have an old Dell XP desktop (about 14 years old), the service tag works but it shows nothing new because I had already updated it a long time ago.
You posted that you already have Service Pack 3 installed, so the link you typed (to SP3) in post #13 is not needed.
You can try the third-party SP4 service pack. Some here have commended it.
You can get SP4 (unofficial) here:

Thanks, I was wondering about it and just afraid of it crashing my hard drive but I guess if others have used it I can always check with them and I realize its's at my own risk anyway. thanks

Make sure you create a System Restore point FIRST.

also, was wondering if you know..since I have SP3 already and this seems to indicate that it can only be installed on XP machines that have SP1...Does this mean I will have to remove everything after SP1 to install it?>>>>>this is info from the page>>> It can be applied to a live Windows XP system which has SP1, at the minimum, installed or it can be slipstreamed (integrated) in any Windows XP installation media. Read more at: https://tr.im/36V6P I don't understand what the slipstreamed means, can you ecplain to me> thanks

NO. As I said earlier you must NOT try to uninstall any Service Packs already installed. I suggest you try to install SP4.
Slipstreaming is where you add new SP files to an existing original Windows XP disk and create a new disk incorporating them.
If you have never created a slipstreamed disk before then I don't think now is the time to do it.

The drivers for your PC's optical drives are included in Windows XP. They are not updated in any service packs. The only way you can fix the problem is by re-installing Windows XP, or by doing a repair.

Have a look over here and follow the instructions word for word.

Have you already tried to run the System Diagnostic at Dell Support after putting in your System Tag??

As Eldon said, a while back, the "drivers" for CD/DVD drives are built-in (even to XP) and there is no such thing as an update that will fix it. On the other hand, numerous OTHER software installs, most famously iTunes, add extra drivers which then become necessary for the device to function. In the device manager, on the details tab for the CD or DVD, they can usually be found in the upperfilters and/or lowerfilters entries.
Luckily, a guy named Doug Knox wrote a script to fix it for you. Download this, save it, unzip it, and run it. It removes the upper and lower filter entries for CD/DVD drives. You may need to reboot; but, poof, they ought to be working again:
