What is the advantage of a dual layer drive over a standard dvd drive? I understand that as much as 8.4 GB can be written on the right kind of disk but the write speeds are pathetic. Is there anything else of significance that a dual layer drive offers?

    Many Thanks

Extra capacity is all they offer. Plus, first generation drives will likely be very expensive, and the media will be pricey at first as well. And currently, there's no such thing as a re-recordable disk for them, unlike current drives. Plus, there are 2 competing formats, like there were with the standard DVDs, and I'm not sure yet whether early drives will handle both, or you may get locked into one format.

Not really ready for prime time yet.
