    Hey,

I don't understand much about computers but my dvd burner isn't working. How do I find the drivers it needs and stuff to get it working again?

    Any input appreciated thanks.

What isn't working with your drive? It may be a hardware problem and not a firmware problem.

    what dvd burner is it?
and what burning software are you using?

It may have to do with SP2. That happened to be.

1 does it open at all, if its got power and opens and closes then its working and the problem is a device driver issue and or check your bios and make sure that the device is listed there and that the ide entry line of dvdr are set on auto

    2 and 2.5 (afterthought)

check windows hardware / device manager drivers there is the device having a problem here yellow exclamation or red means definite problem.
had a dell computer in my shop for repair both drives same story yellow exclamation marks. after reinstalling the computer the drives worked just fine again. could stick in a cd and boot to xp install despite them not working in windows, if you have a norton antivirus or some bootable cd other than an installation which would work too check and see if the drive picks up and boots from dvd drive.

3 if the above is true and the drive works in loading bios then windows should be saying that the drivers are not found/missing or uninstalled, remove by uninstalling both devices in device manager and reboot.

4 upon rebooting xp should reinstall them if not go to add hardware, hit scan for new devices and see what happens.

5 xp should have drivers for your dvd burner, if not find and install them from manufacturer. i have not touched any dvd-r that needed drivers for xp to use it.

6 if uninstalling and reinstalling do not work for you hopefully someone else has an idea. Computer above was chewed through by viruses and needed a reinstall, drives not working was minor on repair list.

another question real quick, can you put a cd in game app. music, see if it reads and trys to install / play if so tell us exactly how it doesn't work,

if you can not burn a dvd you may not be using your bundled software correctly burners typically come with nero or some other form of burning software check suppliers site for updates to burning program and check manufacturer's site for a updated driver for your device. If you have recently upgraded to sp2 then i believe that there are issues with some software programs not working properly after sp2 upgrade, there are fixes available for the problem search the vendors site of your burning software for a sp2 update or fix

You don't need to worry about drivers for CD/DVD drives in Windows as it has native support.

Once installed, Windows then has the necessary files required.

Post back with your operating system and specs, and is the drive visible and displayed correctly in My Computer and Device Manager?

okay, so i'm using Alcohol 120%, Image Burning Wizard, dvd never makes it to 1% finished. (by the way CD's play fine when i insert then into the drive)

Down in the lower left hand corner of the recording wizard, i'm seeing what looks like a drive with a little "though" blurb that shows a red exlamation point... probably not good.... anyway it doesnt even sound like my goddamn disc drive is spinning.... the dvd image doesnt burn, error log is as follows (I'm running windows XP home edition on a HP Pavillion zt3010 us laptop)
