Is it possible for a DVD dual-layer disc to harm a DVD burner?

I've had an HP 740i DVD burner for about a year and it's always worked like a champ, until last week. I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but I burned my first DVD-R DL disc and am now having problems with the drive. The drive is able to read and write CDs just fine, but it now has trouble with DVDs: movie discs start to play and then hang or aren't read at all, game DVDs will show up in Explorer but then hang Windows when I try to navigate to them, and the DL disc I burned will show up in Explorer but hangs everything as soon as I try and navigate through its folders.

So from the look of things, it seems like the laser is having trouble reading DVD discs now, and because of the timing I'm just wary that the DL disc has ruined things somehow. Has anyone ever heard of that? Or would it be normal that a failing laser would work with CDs but not DVDs? I've tried one of those dry-brush cleaning discs on the drive to no effect, so I'm not sure what else to try at this point and would rather not just run out and buy a replacement if I'm not even sure what the problem is. I'd like to try and narrow down the possibilities.

    Thanks,
