DVD-rom not reading dvds! HELP!

Hello,

I have a HP-DVD Writer 740b that will not read DVDs. My computer is an HP Pavillion a1230n, and am running hp windows home edition, sp3.

I have searched around on my own a little and noticed, like on hp forums, that this is a majorly unresolved problem with the 740b types.

Most people that fixed their problems just replaced their DVD-ROM with a newer type. I was wondering if anyone heard of this problem and might know how to fix it before I go out and buy a new one? If theres any other information you would like, I'll gladly help you out with it.
