hello to all of you out there. I'm Sandeep in the Republic of Mauritius.

I just bought a new computer a few weeks ago (a clone, non-branded computer). I have a 17" flat screen. When I play DVDs on the computer the movie picture isn't crisp(using either Microsoft Windows media player or the power DVD software). The picture isn't as clear as it should be. To explain better, I see pixels and little squares instead of a clear picture.

    What should I do?

Please let me know if you need more details.

Thank you for your help. I'm upset that I can't play DVDs properly and I would like to be able to do that. The company that sold me the computer isn't being veru helpful. I have a one year warranty on the computer. The guy who sold me the computer told me that that's just the way the computer is going to play DVDs and I'm not going to accept that. I need help.

    THank you so much.

    Sandeep

Does the video in other applications look bad like viewing pictures or playing games? or is it just DVD's?

What is the brand of your graphics card? Because you might need to update the driver.

Also maybe the setting for your monitor are low or something.

    Just some ideas.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks.

That's not the way computers play DVD's. The salesman is talking rubbish.

What resolution are you viewing, and is it a commercial DVD or one you made?

Try Download this codec pack and then chk .

Also Provide us with more information about your computer

    1) Which DVD Drive ?
    2) Which Vidoe Card ?
    3) What's the Max Resolution and Max Refresh Rate ?
    4) Does this Problem Occurs only while playing DVD or it even happens with a Video CD or in Games as well ?
    5) Click on Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and chk if there is any Yellow Question Marks (?) or Exclamation Marks (!) on any Devices Listed

PS : As far as my Knowledge goes even with a normal Integrated Video Card the DVD Quality is enjoyable ! Your Sales Person is givving you a Run Around.

Hello Morpheus, Insomniac and Hardmarkerin. Thank you for helping me out. Appreciate it!

DVDs and Video CDs do not play properly on my computer. I can view pictures fine. Some more information on my computer:

    (i) I have a sony DVD/CD Rewritable drive (16x/16x)
(ii)The graphics card is: Ge Force Fx 5200 128Mb Tv Out/DVI
(iii) The screen resolution is set at the maximum which is: 1080X1024 pixels. Please note that the problem occurs at all screen resolutions
    (iv)Color Quality: Highest (32Bit)
    (v)DPI setting: Normal 96 DPI
    (vi) Screen Refresf rate:75 Hz

I did the Click on Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and checked if there is any Yellow Question Marks (?) or Exclamation Marks (!) on any Devices Listed. I found no such marks.

Now, the salesman I bought the computer from installed the all software for me. He installed the driver that came on the Cd with the graphics card. Is it possible that the Software that came with the graphics card is not the latest and may still need to be updated? If so, how do I go about updating the software. Do I do this over the internet?

Thanks guys! Appreciate your help. I've invested 2 months salary in my computer and would like to be able to use the DVD feature. After all, I paid for it. Will eagearly wait for your reply.

    Sandeep

    Hi Sandeep

Let me know if your tried to download the codec pack i suggested ?

Also you can download the latest Video Drivers from Here

Click on the Primary Download Site (US English )

Also Let me know the Exact Model Name and Number of your Sony DVD Drive, Go into the Device Manager, you will find an entrie called " CD Rom Devices " Click on the + Sign. You will get the exact details of the drive, that would help me to search for the exact Drive Firmware !

We have the XP nVidia drivers HERE, no need to send people elsewhere.

Sandeep, is 1080 x 1024 your 17" monitors native resolution?

(I know you said it does it at all resolutions, but I'm curious)

And do NOT flash your DVD drive or you will jeopardise your warranty, as well as getting blamed for any problems you have, whether they are related or not.
