I have a system that I just use as a spare computer to run Folding @Home and for my 3 year old to play a few games on...

very old PCI vid card (matrox) with 4mb mem (w00t!!)

is there any reason to install DirectX9 on this system??
as far as I am aware DX is just for graphics, etc...

I have not left any security holes by not installing it have I?

    Any thoughts?

most of the time you can just wait until you rquire a new version of directx to actually install it. The means a game or something else needs it. Security is more dependent on the windows update security pataches.
