Emachine cd prob. (Help !!)

Helping a friend with cd replacement. Old cd would not work, put in new Sony CD RW with DVD. Installed software and now Win98 goes to blue screen when the cd door is opened. Uninstalled software - same prob. Put in old cd drive - same prob. Reinstalled win98 - same prob !!!. What can the prob. be and what can I do next. Emachine is 64mb ram, 10 gig. drive. Can it be a power supply prob or windows corruption that the reload did not fix. The new drive/software says Win98 SE needed, I do not see SE mentioned during reinstall or when looking at orig. Win install. Thanks for any help. Jim
