Email virus sent to all contacts

    Hi Majorgeeks!

    I know I'm not alone with this problem. All of the contacts in my laptop got an email from "me" with a link (that can't even be opened...). It's happened 3 times, the first and second about 1 month ago, then I DLed and ran another antivirus above the one I have, and as it found some problems, I deleted those files and was reassured. However there was another spam which was sent out from my address too all contacts 2 days ago.
    So I followed the instructions in the Read & Run page and some of the programs found some warnings indeed. So I would like to send you the logs now. Could you please check them and tell me if my laptop is safe now? Should I be afraid that someone has all my contacts and can restart this action or if the virus is deleted, it won't happen again?
    I've got Windows 7, 64 bit, so I didn't run the RootRepeal but all the others. I attach the 4 logs, made yesterday.
    As for the softwares, what should I do with them? Should I delete / uninstall Combofix, MGtools, SuperA.S., Malwarebytes? Also since I saved all those programs to my desktop, now I've got 2 icons "desktop.ini" on the desktop too. If I click on them to delete, the computer says "Are you sure you want to delete this? If you do, Windows or other programs might not work right after that." So shall I just put them somewhere else or can I delete them?

    I hope you've got good news for me, that everything is all right now... :)

    Now let's use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    I suggest you create a new folder in your email program and move only those emails that you know to be safe and then delete the rest.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for the quick answer.
    I did what you told me.
    As for Combofix: even if I am not, my laptop is French, and now at the automatic update ComboFix got installed in French, and all the reports from CF and then MGTools have French sentences... I hope that'll not be a problem for you to recognise the things.
    After running CF it made automatic reboot, and when I wanted to open something, it didn't let me. I tried the "System" and firefox and different things, but it always said it couldn't open and if I'm sure to delete it. I was kind of scared that nothing worked, so I made it reboot again, and then everything worked all right.
    Then at running MGtools getlogs, it asked me about a 100 times if I accepted to allow changes from Registry Editor, I clicked 100 times "yes".
    Then it gave me an error message saying "The system denied write access to Hostsfile. If hijacked domaines are in this file, type in ..., delete HijackThisreport file, save under "hosts" and reboot." I clicked OK, but when it continued running I did see hosts and hijack file on the screen... (In your first answer you said something about it too, but as there was another answer and it was deleted, I don't know that any more.)
    Anyway, that's what happened.
    I wanted to attach the 2 files, but now there is no MGlogs.zip!! I don't understand why, it run and told there was a report but now there is no mglogs neither in c:˙nor elsewhere!
    So I can only attach the combofix and you tell me why I can't find the mglogs... :-(
    Sorry this is a mess... :-(

    (And if you happen to answer me the afternoon, I'm afraid I won't be able to check your mail before some hours because it's already midnight here...)

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • C:\Avenger.txt

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I'm afraid I made a mistake, cuz the first time on the link of Avenger I clicked on "open" instead of "save" so it did run but not from the desktop. I don't know if that makes a difference. I copied / pasted the text to the window, executed, was asked to reboot, did it, but after that there was no log file popping up to view, nor is there anything named like that in c:
    Then I clicked on the link, saved to desktop, and extracted to the desktop, run again, rebooted again, still no log file popping up.
    So I run mgtools getlog and it gave me the same error message with Hijack hosts file, but apart from that, it went OK, at the end told me the log was mglog.zip on the c: drive.
    Still, on the C drive I have no avenger and no mglog, BUT there are 4 files that are new (dated on 30/06/11 at 00:05 and 00:16 etc.) So I still can't attach what you asked for, but instead I attach 2 new files. Maybe that tells you something as well... The 2 I attach are knksuk.txt and ufntob.txt. The other 2 new files are too big to attach, 2356 and 3142 MB! Hiberfil.sys + pagefile.sys. What shall I do with them? And why does that what you say not work on my computer? It's frustrating...

    You did not attach the logs which were asked for. You attached the deletion scripts instead. Plus, do not rename logs. There is no need.

    Kestrel13, I guess you didn't read my email to the end. I explained that there was/is no logs on the computer that you asked for, so I can not attach them. I did not rename anything. I said there were 4 new files "born" on the C drive after I ran those tests, so there must be some connection. But I still can not attach Avenger and MGlog if they are not on my drive.

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Got a C:\MGlogs.zip now?

    No, still no MGlogs.zip. After typing shownew it gave me two error messages, but one appeared about 50 times. "Impossible to start or execute the program "\??\C:\MGtools\ltime.exe" becquse it's not compatible with the version Windows 64 bits. contqct the editor to ask if there is a version compatible available."
    The one that appeared 50 times was the almost the same, but \??\C:\MGtools\locate.com
    Then it went through and at the end I got a newfiles.txt, and after running GetRunKey I got a runkeys.txt.
    But while running GetRunKey; the question of "Do you allow that Register Editor makes changes on your system?" appeared 50 times, I always clicked yes, as yesterday.
    I attach the two new files.
    Is it a cruel virus hidden somewhere which evicts the programs to run as they should and give the result which they should? *sigh*

    Download OTL to your desktop.


    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • Vista and Windows 7 users Right-click OTL and choose Run as Administrator)
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.


    When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.

    Attach both of these logs into your next reply.

    At least this program gave me both files needed! :)
    BTW when running these softwares, and by cmd I always switch off Microsoft Security Essentials, and after them I switch it on again. Or can I just leave it doing the real time protection?

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large [​IMG] button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.


    Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach this log file to your next message.

    Dunno... the only problem that I had was that I realised that emails with viagra etc. links were sent out to my contacts, which is embarrassing... But that I could only see after the email was sent out and came back to me. So if you tell me that it's all right now and that my computer is clean, no more emails will be sent by a virus? Even if MGtools didn't work and all...?
    If it's OK, please tell me which software I should keep and which I should delete. (Also from Avenger, OTL, OTM, Defogger, Combofix, the logs, hiberfil & pagefil.sys - they take a huge space)
    So you think my computer is clean? No more virus emails?
    Actually I don't know how that happened because I always delete every spam as soon as I receive them, and only open attachments from mails that I know.

    If you have cleaned out your inbox, compacted the deleted email and only saved those emails you know are clean/safe, then you should be ok. Most AV software will not find items in your mail programs. Best thing to do is just keep an eye on things. Pay attention to the last link I give you on how to protect yourself.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.


    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME

    Thanks for the reply and the help. I've been away for a week, that's why I answer only now. As I said, I never open any email attachments from unknown senders, and delete all the spams, so I guess that was not the cause of the problem. Actually the next day of your reply another spam was sent out "from me" to all my contacts, so I finally changed my yahoo password. A friend of mine found out that the IP address where the spam was sent out from was from Romania or Bulgaria - whereas I'm in France. So I guess it was some heckers who tracked down my password and sent those mails, it wasn't anything on my laptop. Nevertheless it was good to do a full check-up and cleaning on the notebook, now there is definitely no virus.
    Another question though. I'll uninstall and delete those programs you said. There was no word about the hiberfil & pagefil.sys files though - these came to my drive after I made the MG scanning. Can I delete those two? And also there are two "Desktop.ini" files on my desktop now, and if I click to delete them, it tells that Windows or another software might not work after deleting. Shall I leave them or is it safe to delete them too?

    Did you run the C:\MGTools\MGclean.bat? That should have re-hidden those system files. If they were not re-hidden, go to the control panel / Folders Options / View / and check the "Do not show hidden files and folders."
