I got a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive, plugged it in, the drivers were installed (little pop up window saying so), then I decided to format the drive 'cause it came with all this stuff on it.

The thing is I erased the folder that said 'drvinstall' was that a mistake? Will the PC not recognize it or auto-install a driver without it?

I haven't unplugged it yet, and am wondering if I should put anything on it before I do so.

The drivers are included with Windows, and were installed by Windows. That happens the first time you plugin a new external HDD or flash drive.
