When I try using Internet Explorer 8, I get a window with the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working". If I boot in safe mode, it works.

    - I recently removed AVG because I was getting too many popup messages.
    - There is a similar message when I try using Firefox and Super AntiSpyware (SAS). Also, SAS will not run in safe mode.

This is an Acer Aspire X1200 desktop running Vista Home Premium SP1.

After surfing the web, I tried these fixes in IE:
    - cleared Enable Protected Mode
    - in /Advanced tab, I did a Reset
    - cleared Third Party Extensions

    ========= Removal Procedure
previously removed AVG (no other Antivirus software running)
    only Windows Firewall running
removed old Java programs / installed latest version
    emptied recycle bin
    ran CCLEANER
    MSCONFIG set to Normal startup
Add/Remove programs - no malware found in list
    - restarted
Error: IE3SH.exe - unable to locate component BHO.DLL
    ========== Vista Removal
    UAC turned off
    unable to run SAS
    downloaded and ran SAS Portable
    - found several items
    Unable to use IE8
    ran Repair Broken Network Connection
    - restarted
    - went to print Log but portable version does not save it.
Reran SAS portable and saved the attached log

Unable to run MalwareBytes - will not start

This may not be a malware problem but we will not know until you finish running the READ & RUN ME and attach the rest of the logs. You need to run ComboFix, RootRepeal and MGtools.

Finished the READ & RUN ME with mixed results:

    ran RootRepeal
    - could not read the boot sector. Adjusted Disk Access Level one notch.
    reran RootRepeal
    - error window opened, but it was blank
    booted to Safe Mode
    reran RootRepeal
    - error: could not read our index block!

    ran MGTOOLS
    - saved MGLOGS.zip

    Restarted
IE8 opens with a blank screen and does not connect.
    Firefox opens then immediately crashes.

You did not run and attach the requested log from ComboFix.

You also need to attach the below two log from SUPERAntiSpyware which shows that these scans found problems to fix:
    Code:
    "C:\Users\davidc\AppData\Roaming\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\"
    Jun 11 2010 7437 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 06-11-2010 - 23-26-28.log"
    Jun 11 2010 48139 "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 06-11-2010 - 16-55-10.log"

Also please delete the below task files:
    C:\Windows\Tasks\fedkcfdkc.job
    C:\Windows\Tasks\{5B57CF47-0BFA-43c6-ACF9-3B3653DCADBA}.job
    C:\Windows\Tasks\{7B02EF0B-A410-4938-8480-9BA26420A627}.job

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks for replying.

ComboFix failed to start. I double click in the desktop icon, but nothing happens.

    Attached the two SAS logs.
    Deleted the three tasks.
    Did the fixme.reg successfully.
    Ran ccleaner.
    Ran MGtools\GetLogs.bat as Administrator
    attached MGlogs.zip

IE8 still fails to run in Normal mode.

    And thanks for the help!

This may not be due to malware. It could just be due to a browser addon; however, let's finish fixing some issues on your PC that still remain.

First uninstall: McAfee Security Scan Plus

Now run this: McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Now I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove eveything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and defintely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files". Yes overwrite the previous file of the same name from the last fix. Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now. You may not see many of these especially after uninstalling McAfee. Just ignore any not found and continue on with the fix.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7 make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You have a lot more to do. ;)

Now go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Here we go:

Ran avenger with the new input script.
Downloaded, extracted and ran TDSSkiller from the Run command line.
    - it did not ask to do anything
Downloaded the latest MGtools and ran with UAC disabled as Admin.

    attached logs.

I can now connect with both IE8 and Firefox!

    thank you, thank you!
    :-D

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
