    Hi,

Everytime I click on an excel doc, it opens Excel and the document fine BUT then tells me that the document is already open. (which it was not!) I just ditch the notice and everything works fine

If I open the doc from within Excel there is no such warning.

Anyone know what's going on here?

A quick question. On a reboot. Does this issue still happen?

The document (spreadsheet) you are opening has an extension of .xls?

    The following may be convuluted.

    Anyway:

Open explorer (Click Start, Run, then type in Explorer (press enter))
Click the "Tools" menu bar, then select "Folder options"
Next click the "File Types" TAB.
Once the extension list has shown (may take a bit of time, pending on computer performance):
Scroll down and highlight (click) ".xls Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet" within (registerd file types).
Click the Advanced button, within "Details for 'XLS' extension"
    Under "Actions" select (click) "Open".
    Click "Edit".
    ACTION, should have: &Open
APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION: C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\"office version you have"\EXCEL.EXE /e
USE DDE should be checked ( √ )
    DDE MESSAGE: [open("%1")]
    APPLICATION: Excel
    DDE APPLICATION NOT RUNNING: (blank)
    TOPIC: System

If any of these are different, then you may need to change them.

If this is accurate, then we'll look further into this situation.

HI Thanks for your help so far.

    yes the files are *.xls

No difference when rebooting. Seems to have happened ever since I loaded excel 97 onto my new XP machine.

Went through your File types editng process but when I clicked OK I got
"The specific program could not be found. Make sure the file name and path are correct. "
But they are correct! I navigated the excel.exe double clicked and excel started fine.

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe %1

Cut and pasted this (without %1) from File Types into RUN and Excel fired up fine.

Even when I try to "OK" an unchanged File Type editing it still comes up with the error.

The only differences between what I have and what you suggest are:

%1 at the end of the application, you suggest /e

and instead of "&open" it only has "open"

So basically can't save your changes to see if they will work.

    Any ideas.

    Try re-registering Excel :

Close Excel and click Start > Run and type excel /unregserver

Then click Start > Run and type excel /regserver

Or find the .xls file that you want to run, then right click it, and select "Open With". Then select Choose Program. Next Navigate to the executable of excel.. Making sure that you have selected "Always use..........".
