(not sure where this topic belongs, please place me in right forum if wrong.)

i was playing a game when my computer froze, locking up forcing me to restart my computer. When i logged back on, it took longer than usual and no icons or start menu was there, only my background. I crtl+alt+del and started up some programs to see if it would work, and it did. So i did a few scans with Spybot - Search & Destroy and Hijackthis. Both gave me nothing dangerous. So, i restarted my computer again. The "end program" error asked if i wanted to end "explore.exe" i ended the task and let my computer restart. But same thing happend. Using firefox, I pulled up majorgeeks.com and searched for some help. After 5-10min, all the sudden my icons and start menu started to load.

So, i was wondering if anyone knows what my problem is and/or how to fix it...
does it have something to do with my explore.exe, virus some sort, or something else???

plz if anyone has any tips, please help. THNX!!!

in addition to these problems, after trying to run other programs, i found out that they take twice as long to load and sometimes they crash and freeze my computer for a little bit.

im really clueless about this problem. I really believe it has something to do with the explorer.exe. Could it be that explorer.exe is messed up in some way?
plz, anyhelp would be greatly appretiated.

Your problems may not be malware related. It could be that you jsut corrupted some system files. The only way we can be sure on whether malware is causing a problem is by having you run our cleaning process which is attached below. Please run ALL steps. If you have difficulties running any steps due to your PC problems, you must let us know when you come back. However do not skip anything just to get to the end point of getting a HijackThis log because HijackThis logs DO NOT show all malware problems and are in reality not that useful for fixing many problems.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
    • Bitdefender
    • Panda Scan
    • HijackThis

i know i should do the scans, but before that i was wonder how i would fix a corrupt file??
oh, i tried runnin in safety mode, but it still takes 5-10 min to get the icons, menu, and its extremely slow..

while i wait for a reply i'll get going with the scans.
    thnx.:)

The below information is not a malware forum topic.

I don't know what OS you have since you did not tell us so the below does not apply to all OS's.

You can run sfc /scannow from a command prompt Window. Open a command prompt by clicking Start, Run, and entering cmd and click OK.

You may be prompted for your Windows CD if it is needed. If the CD does not match the current installed Service Pack revision level you could install old files and may need to do Windows Updates afterwards.
