Whenever i login as a Guest or with a Limited account, i get the following error:

    Explorer.exe--Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)

All i see is the desktop, I tried to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and from File--> Run type in explorer.exe, but i get the same error as before. Now, i'm pretty sure a nasty trojan horse (don't know which one) has infected XP Pro. I found IEDFix.exe in windows/system32 & windows/Prefetch folder. Also, process.exe was in windows/system32, along with srchts.exe, too. I manually delete those files, but it did NOT help with anything. Anyone know what to do?

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

This does not sound like a malware issue. It just sounds like you are trying to load something with Explorer that the restricted accounts are not allowed to load. You may want to post about this in the Software Forum.

Those files you mentioned are not problems. You downloaded/installed them when you used programs like SmitFraudFix, VundoFix, or FixIEDef.

NOTE: The Guest account should be disabled as it is a security risk.

AFAIK, the only process that loads on startup is dlccmon.exe, which is part of my Dell AIO printer. This is according to msconfig & Autoruns. Under Autoruns, nearly 95% of processes are from Microsoft. Also, anything NOT by MS, was present before i had this problem. How could something load with Explorer? Is there anyway i can find it?

Dozens of DLLs load with Explorer. Anyone of them could have restrictions that do not allow limited user accounts to load them.

And I seriously doubt that dlccmon.exe is the only program loading at startup. Are you saying you have no antivirus, no antispyware, no firewall, or similar that loads when you boot your PC? There are many services that also run in the back ground that are part of your Windows OS.

You may have also run something recently that changed user access rights.

We can check your PC for malware by having you do the below if you wish. You will find that some of this will not run on restricted accounts either.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions. If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

I fixed it!:-D You were right, the problem was NOT malware/virus related , but had to do with file permissions of browseui.dll. You see, i edited this file with Resource Hacker to remove a link in there to M$ anti-piracy crud. Apparently, when Reshack saved changes to the file, it left out 'Users" permission to read+execute the file, i restore that via the 'Security' tab in Explorer.

    Thanks a lot.
