explorer.exe eating up lots of RAM

explorer.exe eats up about 40-50mb of ram when running. is this normal. it use to use only 20mb before.

 

AbbySue had a problem with this before if I remember correctly. I don't see how or what would cause explorer.exe to use that much memory, but maybe AbbySue found a solution to her problem that would help you.

Explorer.exe is the shell, so perhaps try turning off all the extra "bells and whistles", like all the colorful, vibrant themes. I'm not sure as to what operating system you're running, but try disabling or turning off any memory hoggish features that relates to the OS's shell.

If it were me, I'd play around and change my shell to the old progman.exe, which even XP has available. Doing this isn't really a solution, but more of an experiment to see whether it still uses a rediculous amount of memory. If it does, then I'd start to suspect a memory leak or worm... or something!

no nothing like that is happening, and i just have the normal xp blue theme, nothing else.and i dont have many programs running. and what did u mean when u said it could be a memory leak?

 

by the way, can u guys check and tell me howmuch ram your explorer is eating up?

 

for some ppls this will work,goto display properties and choose the winxp theme and apply it.

 

Does it eat ram in Safe Mode too?

 

havent tried in safe mode

 

it eats up 42mb of ram when no windows r open

Try turning on windows classic settings and see what you have going on.

With explorer.exe i would have about 11.5mb used
With litestep.exe it uses 4.2mb

Well, did you try Safe Mode? I see you said you didn't, but thats it.

No offense, but I'm not willing to suggest anything until you have tried this.

 

BTW, my explorer.exe uses 35mb...

yes i have, ive done all the av and spyware checks.and i booted into safe mode it took up about 11mb ram. btw i am using a modified explorer.exe but that dont matter cause i already tried with the original explorer.exe.same thing.

 

Use msconfig to narrow it down.

Disable all startup items and all services except the rpc services, plug and play and system restore.

Uncheck process win.ini and system.ini

If explorer is working right, start enabling services 5 at a time.

Keep checking ram useage per reboot.

Do the same for startup items.

Narrow down the culprit.


If I was to wager a guess, I would say its the theme you are running. Try setting it to Windows Classic.

Um, disable third party browser extensions in advanced IE options.

Those affect explorer.exe as well.

If none of the above help (including msconfig), then i would suspect drivers, or spyware doing it.
