Running Win2000
Able to login @Win2000 username screen
Tries to load personal settings
Receive error "Failed to open registry handle in ATIPOLL"
Click o.k.
NO desktop applications load
Blank desktop visible
PLEASE HELP....

That error is related to your ATI video card drivers, filename ati2evxx.exe

Boot into Safe Mode and verify that it doesn't happen there. Assuming it doesn't try uninstalling/reinstalling your video drivers.

 

Thank you for your assistance...one slight problem....while I select safe mode and login...I have a black screen that reads safe mode but NOTHING is there. I have also tried safe mode with command prompting...still nothing. How can I uninstall/reinstall if I cannot get passed this black screen. I even tried pressing the Windows button...still nothing.

Do you think this is a virus?

 

Try this:

In Safe Mode, press Ctl-Alt-Del, click Task Manager > Applications tab > New Task

type in 'control', when Control Panel comes up, go into Add/Remove and uninstall your video drivers. Reboot and follow the prompts to reinstall them.
