While using Mozilla Firefox I kept getting a fake Windows Defender page which told me I had a serious virus infection and that I had to call Tech Support (1-800 number kindly provided) to fix it. There was an animated cursor running all over the page, lights flashing, etc. I shut Firefox down, started back up, and got the same page when clicking on another web site.. So I came here and on the advice of a member, ran the Malware removal instructions. I got everything done except MGTools. It downloaded to my root drive fine, and ran when I clicked on it. But it gave me the following text in the DOS window:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following feature couldn’t be installed:

    NTVDM

Windows couldn’t fine required files to complete the requested changes. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and try again.

    Error code: 0x80070490

Tell me how to solve this problem

I was connected to the Internet using Chrome. So I tried again using Explorer, then with Firefox. All with the same result. I am the Administrator on this computer, so not sure what to do there. In any case, it wouldn't respond to trying again, and sent me to a generic Windows page for problem resolution from "Tell me how to solve this problem." No help there. Plus there was no MGtools zip file created.

So anyway, here's the info I did get from ADW cleaner, Malwarebytes, Roguekiller, and HitmanPro.

So, the computer needs NTVDM to run MGtools, as MGtools a 16 bit program and NTVDM allows a 32 bit processor to run 16 bit programs. A quick Internet search tells me that I should already have it on my system, but MGtools seems to think I don't. To be clear: MGtools batch file downloads and runs. It's not being stopped from doing either. It just doesn't complete the task, giving me the error noted above.

Let's forget about running MGtools now. The issue you are having with it seems to be a problem with your Windows installation.

Is the problem you are having with this popup only occurring when you run Firefox? Please try doing the below:

    Reset Firefox to Defaults
