Fathers IE Crashes

This is my first post here so go easy on me. My dad's computer is XP home has a Internet Explorer problem. Every time it opens to be used it will crash and try and send out that error report. I installed Netscape so he can surf, but now I can't get Windows Updates. I have used Spy-bot to get rid of spyware but I have never messed around with trojan removers. Is there anyone out there that can help? I just (5 months ago) did a clean OS (Format HD and all) install on his computer and I don't really wanna spend that much time fixing it again. I will check back tomorrow evening and see if anyone can help me. Sorry this is long winded.
