My Computer dell inspiron 9300 with preinstalled xp home was very slow and now all i get is a black screen witht the words

    WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE FOLLOWING FILE MISSING;

    WINDOWS\SYSTEMS32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

On my Dell I have run a diagnostic test in f11 and this had told me everything is fine I can access f2 which is bios and I can start from a cd. But dell did not give Xp Home cd with my pc, however I have an XP Professional cd oem version and an xp home version(also oem) for my main PC if this helps but it says only for product support! Not sure if this is okay? Can I copy my hive files (all five of them) from my pc and put on removalble disk and then copy onto dell laptop??? I also have an Ultimate Boot Cd for windows made by Cyberdome Technologies but do not know how to work it. I have also been told I can copy the hive files which are either corrupt or obselete but I tried this in cdm and that is how I got into this mess from microsoft article.

Article ID: 307545 ; At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

    md tmp
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
    copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

    delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
    delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

    copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
    copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
    copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
    copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
    copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

At beginning could not type md tmp. I also made a mistake using temp instead of tmp???

Lastly I was told to do a chkdsk /r. but according to others in the supposed know

DO NOT DO THIS ON A DELL COMPUTER OR ALL FILES/SYSTEMS ARE LOST.

I just tried UBCD4WIN with my oem xp pro version and this failed to work.

    http://support.dell.com/support/top...d=89C2285FB22749B5ABF7CCB9CB612D47&doclang=en

On this web page of dell it tells how to repair using xp disk but will i lose all my data???

Please help i am so confused
