Hi all. Wondering is some of you scarily brilliant people could help me with this issue. Since I've had XP, I've had this minor irritating issue..............When I'm at a website, and right click on a picture to save it, the default file type to save it is *ART. From the "drop down" in the file save box, I have only one more choice, and that is Bitmap. If I save as *ART, I can't open it later. I get a dialog box that says "cannot open this file type, would you like to search internet for program to open it". So needless to say, I've been saving as Bitmap. Then every so often, I'll come accross a picture, that just won't save as Bitmap. Even though I choose Bitmap, It saves it as an "unknown file type". I have 3 other computers in the house, one with 95, one with 98, and one with ME. On those, my save choices are Jpeg, and Bitmap.
No problem with those. I'd rather save stuff in Jpeg, because it's a more common file format, but don't seem to even have the choice on XP. (XP Home edition BTW). If I take pics with my digital camera, THEY save as Jpeg, so it's not like the Jpeg format has dissapeared from the computer or anything. LOL
I AM running AOL on all the computers, and all version 8.0. So I don't think it's got anything to do with the ISP software. It's the last irritating thing, I have to sort out with XP, now that I've got all the security holes plugged, and that stupid Messenger Service pop-up gone. ( All thanks to the postings on these message boards, by the way ). Thanks in advance, for any help. Brian

.Art is an AOL format. If you have installed or are using AOL then that is most likely the problem. You can download .art file support for internet explorer using the windows update site.

You can also just use IE or another browser while connected to AOL, simply minimize AOL and use a browser of your choice on the connection.

Thanks FW190. I'll whine to AOL about it. I usually at least get a free month out of them, when I complain. Or maybe they'll mail me ANOTHER wonderful FREE Harry Potter calendar !!!! LMAO.
And yeah, I know Goldfish........I get that ribbing a lot. I'm used to it. Here's some MORE ammo for ya.........I'm a cigarette smoker too !!!!!!!!! LMAO

From AOL Tech Support: From the AOL toolbar, SETTINGS>PREFERENCES>INTERNET PROPERTIES.
From the WEB GRAPHICS tab, choose "NEVER COMPRESS GRAPHICS". Now choices of saving a file on the drop-down, are JPEG or Bitmap. Hummmm. It's an answer, and it works. But not recommended for dial-up connection (as I have). Cuz the web page graphics load at half the speed with it set like this.
I guess my best bet for a workaround, is to use PowerDeskPro to convert the formats. Hopefully XP will accept that program without exploding. LOL

I use AOL as well. I sucks, and you guys were right on with the format. I hate that too. Nothing like saving a bunch of pictures of cool computers then realizing you save them in the ugly incompatible .art format.
