I should be showing up by 10PM EST. Will only have the i7 for now while I wait for the SB RMA to show up in a couple of weeks. At least LBMEST will have some company now with his SMP spikes!:major

BTW,I see you lost GPU FOLDING. Sucks up lots of power and is now not cost effective.

Thanks Fred. I got a 2684 SMP for my first big fold back. It's taking 51 min./TPF=3.72 days. I might have to kill a GPU to get the stats up as I don't want to miss out on the bonus points.:eek ;)

I am so out of the bleeding edge of folding, that I don't even know what that means! :-D

You crazy kids with your rap music, and TPF's... STAY OFF MY LAWN! :-D Great work Augie! I am starting to get the computer upgrade urge. Might pick your brain in 6 months or so to help me upgrade to one that folds more better than mine.

:-D Sorry about that man, I thought you had a quad rolling ATM. BTW, don't look at big GPU's for folding as those are energy hogs for PPD/$ electrical consumption compared to current and future CPUs PPD wise. An i7 may be in your future as the prices will surely drop in 6 mths. time for Intels.:major Heck, there might even be an octo core AMD BY THEN.:drool

Aw Right augie! Glad to see those points rolling.:-D Yeah I killed the GPU's for now. We got hit with a rate hike awhile back and will be seeing another one soon plus the AC will be running soon.

Jeez FredG, you have got to get back in the electron destruction business. It's great for global warming and climate change.;)

    @augie

great to see you back in the fold, no matter which team it is for! (just missed you)

noticed you were flat lined and thought to myself "I wonder what happened to augie"?

speaking of GPU's I do not see me purchasing any more of those $power$ hungry devices.

I foresee the upgrade to the i7 in my future. (as soon as the insane prices go down some)

I will continue the use of the older gpu's I have (2x Alpha Dog Edition 8800GS - extremely factory over clocked) with the added one I recently purchased from another forum (275GTX factory over clocked, not so extremely over clocked) until it gets to hot here and will down grade to the standard Alpha Dog Edition and my 2x 8600GT gpu's as our electric bill dictates and the GPU2 availability of WU's.

I used to receive a lot of the core 15 WU's but no longer do since the Stanford servers choose which WU's by device and now only receive core 11 WU's.

I haven't used the beta v7 client as of yet, but have downloaded it to my desktop,it looks to be an easy learning curve, uses an xml file to configure or automagic pilot if desired.

nice to see everyone here and hello to all.

    fold on

Augie, I have a Q6600 CPU, just never got many points when I had the quad folding. Am looking at an I7, if I can ever save up the cash. All my dang hobbies are so dang expensive... :-D

Good to see you back folding Augie, yeah I know I need to look into SMP folding over GPU, killed a GPU a while back, so dont know if its worth it with the 570GTX

Hey great to see you folding again Augie.
Me being the curious person i am i was looking at your stats over the last few weeks and saw you were flat lined on both MGs and the other place.

No doubt when you start to crank your PCs up you will quickly pass me (I fold under "camlib" here currently 30 in the MG list, I still only fold during the day which is a pity because i could be pushing 13 to 14000 PPD if i could run 24/7.

@ David i saw you knocking out big points untill a couple of weeks back and then you dropped down again.

Thanks for the welcome, nice to be missed.:)

I had mine OC'd to 3GHz and got some 4K PPD IIRC. Ya on the expensive hobbies.-D

Ya, we had a short power out about 6 weeks ago and I was not ambulatory until now.:) Too bad you can't run 24/7 with that monster but so be it;:( BTW, I'm in 5th place now for PPD.;)

@ David. There's nothing tougher on a GPU than folding There's plenty of folk that OC them but I don't anymore as I can't afford to replace or install a waterloop. I've already lost a 980GT.

That is strange Augie, I don't think I have killed one yet... I have been folding on this 260 for over a year, and at least one 8800 for 2 years or so. I do use Rivatuner to max out the fan speed. I hate variable fan noise...

Yeah was looking at temps and while not excessive its not a cheap card to kill, so I knocked down the GPU usage slider, so will do points but in a longer timescale, not fired up in parallel the CPU folding as that was adding to heat, so maybe time to look at SMP.

Indeed, so I may have to look at the other means even if its CPU folding with maybe a vastly reduced GPU %.

    Hi Augie

I had forgotten for a moment also hahahhahah, had to fire up Everest to look, its an i7 920.

I have a half finished project sitting in the garage with an i5 CPU and a GTX470 but the Mobo is not very good (i have forgotten the model but it's an intel) maybe i will get around to finishing it someday and kick in some extra points but at the moment things are a bit out of sorts at home, my wife is very sick and i have got a lot of pain so everything is on hold for the time being.

  18. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Hehehe, OK then, for some 30K PPD you'll have to OC it to 3.6 GHz3.8GHz running SMP2 24/7 to be able to get that number without a GPU running as that reduces the CPU performance by some %10 or so. At that OC the retail HSF has to be replaced as it's inadequate. A Corsair H70 sealed liquid cooler would keep that puppy from sweating.:major

Sorry to hear about the health issues Bill. I wish both of you a speedy recovery.

Hi Augie, don't think I will be taxing the PC that much, next build is likely to be water cooled but that's some time off yet building one of those, rather wait until they remove the damn bios out of the boot equation.

What sort of temps does that H70 get the cpu too, idle and load?

I have downloaded the SMP client, mmmmm 69 credits hahahahahaha likely I messed a setting up, will complete this WU tho.

LOL Bill, that's the power of the SMP bonus at work , some 60K points every 3 or 4 days, just like LBMESTs points chart.;)

@DavidGP Sorry Dave, that was a typo asI meant an H50 which @ load and 3.8GHz is 70C and looking at the H70 specs that would be 65C but noisier as it's push/pull.

    :-D hahahha,

Would the noise be down to the fans used and if different ones where used say two better designed quite 120mm fans where used, they don't list the noise on their site sadly.

Found a review and 31.5 dBA at full speed, but don't know the CFM that they push out as Noctua fans have low RPM but the design still pushes out a respectable CFM.

Great stuff Augie, cheers, and looks as if those fans are not optimal as the Noctua NF-P12's would be better even left at their nosiest 1300RPM and 92.3CFM with 19.8dB

will read the review later on but cheers for the link.

@Dave concerning the SMP WU for 69 points

seems you may need the switch -smp on the regular older stable client, but using the beta v7 client does it all magically without intervention from the user.

but the reason I have not used the v7 beta client on a regular basis as of yet is because I need to manually configure my client to install two single core WU's and not the SMP because I barely have enough time to complete on a dual core AMD 4200+ and like to from time to time play an antiquated game online,MOHAA and just to lazy to do the research to do the manual configuration, though it does install my 2x GPU clients correctly.

Will give that V7 client a go in a mo, cheers, yeah I had added the switches on install, the next WU was a 432 point or something.

I'll be fooling with v7 in about 14 hrs. as that's when my -bigadv will finish. :cool Man, those are wimpy WU's for an i7, just saying.;) I think we should start a new thread for v7 as this is the future of folding for a long time to come.:)

Apparently v7 doesn't speed anything up except for installation and configuration for new folders and those that have ATI video cards which only produce 1/2 what they should so far, not much use for current power folders ATM. The source is impeccable.;)

adding some insight to the V7 client discussion, for comparison purposes. I'm clearing 600 points with no bonus per smp2 WU. Using a Pentium E5400 @ 3.06Ghz, and 6Gb of 1333Mhz DDR3 @ 904Mhz.

I was going to post this in my thread, but I saw David mention about his low scores. If I'm not mistaken David, are you not running a more powerfull system than mine?

ahh that would make sense :-D

I shut mine down for 6 hours on the first WU which resulted in about 480 points, as I was doing some fan work and other stuff, but will run it now 24/7 for a few WU's to make sure I can leave it on when i go camping :)

I just loaded my GPU'S and the noise wasn't too bad but when I started the CPU SMP it drowned out the others. I will get some Noctua's for some peace during the nocturnal times.;) Thanks.

noticed CoolIT CPU FHE (Fluid Heat Exchanger) and thought you all might be interested.

checked cost on ebay seems to be in the same price range as the H50.

is the i7 the only cpu architecture that can complete the big advanced WU's in the time frame allotted?

i7 and above OC'd. I've heard of folks using an AMD hexacore like a 1100T Thuban and OC'ing it to 4 GHz IIRC. Then you have to set up VMWare with Linux or if you have an extra copy of W7 just laying around. The need for VMWare is to fool the client into thinking it has 8 cores to work with, SMP -bigadv won't work with fewer cores, be they real or virtual.
