find info on programs by name

does anyone out there have a good site for determining what programs i should be allowing access through zone alarm - or for that matter - what programs in the startup on windows i should be actively looking to remove. ie. right now zone alarm is telling me that mscom.exe is trying to access the internet. when i google it, i get pest patrols site in german ( i can read some german but not software instructions)
