    hey
i have an intel pentium 4 3.6GHz socket 478 processor which i got bundled with a motherboard. this mother board isnt great which is why i was looking to upgrade it...

but...when i checked online for motheroards that fully suport a 3.6 gig p4 socket 478...i found that this processor doesnt even exist really. it isnt even on the intel website, but it is definately a socket 478 running at 3.6 GHz, iv even checked the writing on the processor itself

I then bought an msi mother board which in some places said it supports up to 3.6 GHz proceessor and in others said it supports up to only 3.4. this wouldn't even post.

soooo, does anyone have any ideas on what i should do now? i have a processor which shouldn't even exist and i cant even find a mother board for it

Well do one final comparitive assessment and DL CPU-z:

If this confirms 1.7Ghz, have to ask were'd you get 3.6GHz from??? The data is indicating otherwise?

btw thats a screen shot of my system window i took at the same time...that says its a pentium 4 3.6GHz?
could it be coming up as a 1.7 Ghz cos the crappy motherboards underclocked it?

I would think most Asus motherboards that have a 478 socket would fit any processor.

hey thanks for the reply, yeh they would fit, its just that the processor wont run at all or at its full potential in a motherboard whose chipset isnt designed for that sort of speed

On the system that is showing it as a 1.7, go to start/control panel/power optitions/and set it to home/office desk, and see if it wont show the correct speed. You may need to restart. ed

I have never seen this happen, most times when the fsb dont match the mother board it will show up as a lesser cpu, let us know if you figure it out. ed

Your confusion seems very valid but at the end of the day you have a 478 socket CPU (as do I PC2) and thus any socket 478 mobo should suffice as a replacement. Personally I would look at this mobo (I almost bought it myself but just built PC1) as it will allow you to have PCI-e X16 vid cards plus many other features:
