Firefox Tweaks

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

I have come up with a few tweaks extra that will increase the speed of firefox. Now some of these are all ready out there but alot of them will break your speed.I have done tons of testing.on what works and what does not.

    1. Enter about:config in your address bar
    2. Use the Search Filter option.
    3. “Toggle” their values to false or true bye double clicking on the line of code.

network.http.pipelining”. If it’s false (it's false by default), double-click that line and change it to true.

"network.http.proxy.pipelining" (enabling pipelining in proxy) to true by double-clicking it.

    "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to 8 by double-clicking it.
This means it will make 8 requests at once.
There is no point setting it higher than 8 as it will make Firefox load pages slower instead.
    The default value is 32

"network.http.pipelining.ssl"If it’s false (it's false by default), double-click that line and change it to true.

Yet another network feature that can be tweaked is the maximum number of connections by server, and in total that are allowed at any given time. Users on slower connections may want to reduce this number to help prevent HTTP connection timeouts. Users on faster connections may want to increase it. Below are the settings that I use.

To enable the setting so that Firefox uses more connections at once, do the following:

    1) In the Firefox address bar type: about:config and then hit Enter.
    2) In the “Filter” search, type: max-connections

    You should see the following:

    network.http.max-connections
    network.http.max-connections-per-server

I have the first setting set to 48 and the last setting set to 5.
If you are on a slower connection, the default or lower would be better.

Few more tweaks Go into tools then options then in options click on advance tab.Now in advance tab go to Data Choices untick the following Telemetry,Firefox Health Report,Crash Reporter, these should only be on when an issue arises.

Another Few more tweaks to add.

There is some thing called plugin container.exe in your task manager when firefox is being used. There is away to disable this in the about config. All this does is slow firefox and takes up ram that is not needed. It is a crash reporter for flash player but its not needed.

    In the filter Type: dom.ipc

When the list comes up The ones you want to disable are the Booleans make them false.

    Disable these below first.

    "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled" make this false.
    "dom.ipc.plugins.flash.subprocess.crashreporter.enabled" make this false.
    "dom.ipc.plugins.java.enabled" make this false.
    "dom.ipc.plugins.reportCrashURL" Keep this True.

Now these next dom.ipcs will have to be added to permanently disable the (plugin container.exe).

Add these below and make them all false.
    "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll"
    "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll"
    "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll"
    "dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nptest.dll"

Next option is to Go to tools and then options then go back to the advance tab and then go to update.
Here go to the Firefox section update if you are not computer savvy keep the Automatically install updates checked.
If you are computer savvy and understand how firefox works check the check for updates but let me chose option some updates will break your add'ons.

Make sure you clear out your history about once a week firefox save history takes a lot of space. If you surf the net a lot.

Hmm, not sure they're good for everyone.

The plugincontainer is a sandbox system for Flash/Silverlight/Java, etc., if they crash, Firefox doesn't. Change to your settings and if one crashes, so does Firefox.

History, as in file cache, actually reduces page load times, reducing the amount of HDD space from the 1GB default would make more sense. 250-400MB is more realistic.

Thanks for the info Goldenskull. Wish this type of thing was doable in any and all browsers.

Will also heed satrow's advice though before attempting your tweaks.

(When images are loaded, they can be cached so they don't need to be decoded or uncompressed to be redisplayed here is a way to reduce Ram usage.

In the filter type: browser.cache.memory.capacity it main default vaule is 65,000 some thing.Reduce the number to 18432 this is equal to 1gb or ram.)

Forgot to readd that to the first post.

A few more add'ons that i use too keep down on the web page clutter.

These add'ons will help with your speed.Warning about these add'ons these do work for the current firefox 24.0 you might need to down grade to 23.0 link below.

If you need to downgrade to firefox 23.0 go to link below.

Every bodys system is different it might work faster for faster systems but might be bad for slower computers that have less cpu and ram.And it depends on your ISP speed and how good there connection is.

But the plugin-container.exe will cause issues as it has in the past.

Here's an excellent link for Firefox tweaks that works for me: http://www.tweakguides.com/Firefox_1.html

@Goldenskull: AdvertBan extension hasn't received many good reviews. Wondering as well if AdblockPlus and the one you recommended are overlapping each other.

I have never had firefox crash once since i disabled this plugin. All it does is eat ram.

So, GS, how much RAM do you have and what do you use it all for?

  10. Goldenskull

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

Gaming mostly.8 gigs. Not even maxed out can put 16gigs if i wanted but no point.

And the average game uses 1.5 - 2GB, Windows uses 1-1.2GB, if the browser and plugin container combined used 2GB, you'd still be way under the need to use a paging file on 8GB. Really, don't get too obsessed with trying to save RAM.

Don't sweat it over a 200MB file in memory, like I said, it's there for safety reasons.

Tweak the basics (OS, esp. if you use a single drive), don't install crud (if it's too late for that, uninstall it), generally keep things light. You have 8GB of RAM, if you don't get close to using 90% of it, you're not trying ;)

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

When i run multiple apps like Nevewinter each game client takes all most 1.2gigs now some times i run two or three on the same system so it does add up.

Way you ask well its a good way to transfer items and in game money to another char on the main account.

Right now i am barely pushing 4 gigs. 3.4.

  13. satrow

    satrow Major Geek Extraordinaire

I don't need to ask why, I'm no stranger to running multiple game clients myself ;)

So, compared to your gaming usage, the ~200MB that a plugin container might use is a drop in the ocean, yes?

  14. Goldenskull

True it is but it better if it does not eat ram to begin with.

AFAIK Firefox increases its memory use if you have plenty of RAM to spare.

If you disable the plugin container, that will just cause the increase of the memory kb figures of the Firefox.exe in the Taskmanager. So no advantage in RAM by disabling the plugincontainer. Keeping the plugin container separate, as satrow said:

    Re: plugin-container.exe
Have a look at the FireFox extension FlashBlock
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/flashblock/?id=433
I have been surfing the web for about one hour now and plugin-container.exe has not been created yet. It will be created when I go to YouTube or some other site I have in the FlashBlock 'Whitelist'

    (You all know it's a joke :-D :-D )

Goldenskull I can't follow the rules

That is way i reduce the amount of ram that firefox is allowed to use.

When i am not gaming my system barely pushes 1g on my Page file use and 1.5gigs of ram.Firefox only increase the amount when you have multiple tabs open normally a good good setup firefox will barely hit about 272k in ram. With just one tab open.Firefox will all so increase in ram to about 320k in memory or more in you are watching videos.
