Note: This is in reference to the same unit described in this post:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=208165
but the problem is of an altogether different nature.

Windows XP Media Center SP3 32-bit
    Toshiba Satellite A105 S4084
Intel Pentium M T2050 1.6 GHz Dual Core
    3GB PC5300 DDR2-SDRAM

    Running:
    Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.1.5.5000
    PeerGuardian 2 Beta 6b (09/18/2005)

My new 64GB Lexar™ JumpDrive® TwistTurn USB Flash Drive has just come back with me from an Amazon adventure, and it turns out I wasn't the only one to get all varieties of bodily jungle nasties. The first issue I discovered with this drive while I was still abroad was all of the root folders suddenly having an .exe extension appended to them. They would open when double-clicked, but I was wary of the change, wondering if each request for folder access was initializing some clandestine executable. That problem was described here, moved to another part of the forum than where it was initially posted, and ultimately never addressed. Deleting these folders managed to solved the problem, or so it seemed. The original folders without any .exe were restored upon the suspicious ones' deletion.

The issue I face now is that while attempting to back up data from the drive, I notice another peculiarity; an arbitrary selection of my files have been permanently hidden. They are visible with 'Show Hidden & System Files" enabled, but the 'Hidden' attribute is greyed out, forever checked. They seem to have also been given the designation of system files which will only intermittently prevent me from copying or deleting any of them. It's as though sometimes they act like system files and sometimes not.

Read and Run Me First completed in its entirety with logs attached.

Some noteworthy points of mention include:

-an 'Invalid PE Image' error upon initializing RootRepeal.exe from the desktop (this didn't seem to inhibit the scan)

-Symantec tracked down its own 5-6 infections over the course of the Read and Run Me First, all of which were deleted.

    -System Restore has been toggled.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whenever possible, the E:/ drive in question has been included in scans (RootRepeal would only recognize C:/). The drive remained plugged in for the duration of the Read and Run Me First. Scans of the flash drive have been conducted independent of the Read and Run Me First sequence and have come up completely clean. The logs should show that any infections found were in C:/, not E:/, which only serves to add to the confusion.

Any and all help is appreciated.

    Thanks very much,

    -newmy51

It should not have been toggled until after I gave you an all clear. Let's do the below just to cover all bases:

Insert your flash drive before we begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

    1. Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
    • Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
    • It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
    • Follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
    • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

    2. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) 6 Update 17

    3. Now run this:

Running HostXpert to Reset Default Hosts File

    4. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: []
    • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'SYSTEM')
    • O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'Default user')
    • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    5. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\neoqaz2.dll

    DirLook::
    C:\VIRUS

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    6. Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    • C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    • C:\Documents and Settings\01\Local Settings\temp
    7. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    8. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    The following entries:

    # O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: []
    # O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'SYSTEM')
    # O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'Default user')

did not come up in the HJT scan. The '# O9' entry was found and fixed as instructed.

All other steps were completed. Logs attached.

Your logs are now malware free. If you are still experiencing this problem:

Then I suggest you visit the software forum to further discuss it. :) You can now follow the below steps:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
