Check your firewall log - Not at first, but after downloading a few files it suddenly DOES start talking to an unknown site 219.238.234.148 ... after every download, and having no reasonable reason to do so since update-checking is turned off. Anyone know
    (1) what site is that IP address ?
    (2) what it's reporting back ?
Restored system disk from a backup prior to the flashget install, just to be sure...

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

    That IP address is for:
Which may be an IP address related to www.amazesoft.com who publishes FlashGet. As far as I know there is no spyware in FlashGet.

    Thanks !

Strange  Gold Rolled guaranteed, the Kerio firewall log identified the Flashget program itself as connecting to the site with every download (after a while), and it didn't happened before, nor since the restore from a backup taken immediately prior to the flashget install (paranoid about installs, aren't I). If I'm instructing it not to check for updates, and the behaviour is to connect with every download file, I wonder why that would not be classified as spyware at least in the imterim ?

    Cheerio

Yep, visited www.amazesoft.com and checked the firewall log and the IP is 219.238.233.72 which is in the close geographic neighbourhood of the anomalous flashget activity...

When you installed FlashGet, did you leave checked or did you uncheck the option that says:

    SharedUrl service (recommanded)

This option may be the reason that you see this action. Try installing with out that option checked. Make sure you uncheck the option to install the Google Toolbar too unless you want the additional baggage.
