    awww only for macs :(

Shouldn't Microsoft have it archived somewhere? I can't seem to find it anywhere

I guess I can bring my USB key to school and try to find an old computer that I can jack it off of.

I have all the old Windows screensavers on my computer. I copied them from a Windows 95 computer and installed them to my own (I'm using XP and they work perfectly!). Contact me and I'll send you the screensavers.

Flying Windows was only available for use on Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98 and Me operating systems. However, it can be easily installed on Windows 2000 and XP only by copying it over manually from a Windows 9x/Me PC (or from someone else who copied it: i.e. totalrod2's generous offer above). ;)

Side Notes: The Flying Windows screensaver makes use of the standard PC 16 colors because of when it was introduced. Because this screensaver makes use of only 16 colors, this enables it to run on many versions of computer. Also, Flying Windows draws the Windows logo from using the character #255 Wingdings font to get the Graphic.

    Good Luck!

Incidentally, I'm looking for an old screensaver known as a "Mandelbrot" fractal (named after mathematician Benoit Mandlebrot, an employee of IBM). Here's a screenshot:

I remember watching those swirling patterns on a friend's computer back in '94 and being totally mesmerized by it. There's lots of info online, but I can't seem to find a simple download of this screensaver! Any ideas?

Here is a link to the screensaver.com website where you can download the Mandelbrot v3.1 Screensaver.

Note: This screensaver is FREE and will work with Windows 9x/NT/2000/ME/XP. ;)

    Good Luck!

I sent the file to you twice and it got returned to me both times. Do you have another email address I can send it to? If not, I'll upload it to Rapidshare for you (you can download it from there). Let me know.
Compuable, I tried downloading from that site yesterday and it kept telling me to "insert the disk" :confused????? I spent nearly 4 hours trying to find that screensaver. Nothing but dead ends!

Screensavers won't email nicely, as they're a good platform for viruses. Try changing the file extension, and zipping them.

Hmmmm... Interesting. I just now tested it; by downloading it from that site, installing it and then I immediately uninstalled it with no problems at all. Oh well... don't really know what to advise here except to wish you luck.
    Sorry bout that Bryan... :confused

Really? You didn't get a window which read "insert disk"? I'll have to keep trying every possible combination until it finally works. Nothing's ever easy. Here's the link for the Flying Windows screensaver for all to enjoy:):

And here's the link for the 3D Flying objects screensaver (with the original Windows logo):

You'll need to delete the existing "ss3dfo.src" file from your computer first, otherwise this older version won't install itself.

I managed to get that fractal screensaver running. It worked like a charm after I reinstalled "mscomctl.ocx". But I'm curious about something. When I first started seeing those screensavers back in the early 1990's I could've sworn those patterns were animated (moving, swirling, etc.). Yet none of the Mandelbrot screensavers I've found online seem to have this effect. Rather, they "scan" (with a distinct line which runs across the screen).
Mind you, most of the 90's are somewhat of a blur now[IMG], but did such a saver exist, or is it just me?

Set your wayback machine and check out these Mandelbrot Screensaver (videos) on youtube.com.

P.S. You simply will not believe how MANY of them are on that site. Enjoy!

    Good Luck!

Thanks Compuable, that's it! Just one more quick question (I promise). I downloaded Mandelbrot Explorer, but in order to use it I need to reinstall "start.bmp". Don't ask me how the hell I manage to lose this stuff.... I think I'm a bit too trigger happy when it comes to removing things from the registry. Which directory do I install "start.bmp" to?

I have the flying windows screen saver. I found it on one of my old backed up cds. Just installed it on Windows 7, it works perfect. Let me know if you still want it, or still need it.
