Followed Removal Guide Instructions - Now What?

I followed the instructions in the Malware removal guide. I was unable to start up in safe mode (only shows F1 and F10 (setup and recover) at start-up). I was in normal start-up for removals and on-line scans. Bit-Defender found nothing, so I've not attached notes from that. I will attach results from Counter Spy, PandaActiveScan, and GetRun Key to this note and send a second note with Show New and HJT files attached.

Any Help and Instructions would be appreciated. At moment, issues seem to be following: (1) Following any long period of time (hours, usually) I will find my screen scrambled with the "start and bottom icon" line reduced in size and at the top left. Touching mouse changes screen and freezes it. Only fix is to shut off computer using 'on-off' button on CPU and restart. (2) When trying to move or find files when I click on 'computer' system takes forever (minutes) to display the drives attached to computer and shows a little flashlight looking for them. This is a recent phenomenon. (3) I use Flasser program to get rid of Lasser worm following installation of NetGear WG111 v2 wireless adapter (USB) with its security issue. Have service pack 2 but still have to re-run Flasser on fairly often basis (every few days).

    Thanks for any help,

    AUTiger

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Is your copy of Spyware Doctor a paid version or a free trial version?

Did you knowingly install TrustSoft AntiSpyware? Did you buy it or is it a trial? This is not considered a good application and at one time it was even considered a rogue tool. I suggest that you uninstall this!

Also goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall the below
    IE Host
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

While in Add/Remove programs also uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8EAB99C9-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [41aO] C:\documents and settings\walt\local settings\temp\41aO.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [3ZL4W#A36HPR9H] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Fda76.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rror] C:\Documents and Settings\Walt\Application Data\roah.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will follow your suggestions and let you know the results. Spyware Doctor was (I think) free version. TrustSoft anti spyware was 'given me' for having bought SpyKiller and when it became 'oblolete' they offered me this as an exchange (...hmmm). I have tried to uninstall it, but some elements remain, and it continues to show up in programs list.

Both SpyKiller (as you see from my instructions) and TrustSoft should not be used.

We will remove TrustSoft too! Please add the below to the things to do and attach this log too:

I have completed the steps you provided me in both posts, and I am attaching the new logs from Avenger, GetRunKey, and ShowNew to this post. I will attach logs from HJT and UnKey(name?) in a second post. Thanks for your help, and I sure hope this works.

Okay it looks like you have a file missing that was required to uninstall TrustSoft AntiSpyware. We can take two approaches

    1) manually remove things that remain
    2) or if you have the installation program, reinstall it! Then reboot! Then uninstall.

Let's try option 2 (I'm assuming you still have the installation program).

If you were able to uninstall by this method, attach new logs from ShowNew and HJT.

Let me know either way what happens.

    How are things currently working?

Hello, Chaslang. I downloaded the TrustSoft software and do not have an installation program available. I think we will need to go with option one. Can you tell me what to delete?

As for how things are working: (1) I've not had enough time to know if screen display goes haywire in a few hours or not - will keep watching. (2) I've not had recurrance of lasser worm, but this sometimes takes several days - TBD, here also. (3) When using Windows Explorer to manage files I still am painfully slow when selecting the computer or trying to move to it. All in all, I'm hoping there's some magic left in getting rid of TrustSoft or in the last 5 logs I sent. I'll keep you advised, and when it looks good, I'll toggle the restore. Thanks, AUTiger

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Then reboot!

After reboot, delete the below folder if found:
    C:\Program Files\TrustSoft AntiSpyware

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

:):) Just a follow-up note to let you know that things seem to be working with this 'final' fix. I've made it through the night and half of today with no display abberations or shutdowns due to lasser (or whatever). The only thing left to work on probably has nothing to do with MalWare but file and memory management (takes forever after clicking on 'computer' with a flashlight symbol searching folders) during attempts to move files. I have observed that the D drive (single hard drive but C and D are partitioned on same hard drive) is nearly full (224 MB left of 4+ GB) while C drive has used only 20 GB of 107 GB. I'll see if I can find way to change this and see if it helps. Most of stuff on D seems to be required although I've eliminated some Quicken back-ups that were there.

Thanks for the comprehensive help. Prior attempts with 'hit and miss' single bullet approaches did not seem to work.
