    Using Avira Antivir and Zonealarm
Reviewed Add/Remove programs and removed Viewpoint Media Player
    Updated Java
    Emptied Recycle Bin
    Ran CCleaner
Running 32 Bit Version of Windows
    Changed to Normal Startup Mode

    Ran the following programs:

    SuperAntispyware (log attached)
    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (log attached)
Combofix.exe - detected rootkit and rebooted (log attached)
    RootRepeal (log attached)
    MGTools (attached in next post)

I still get random windows opening in my browser and avira occassionally indicates there is something harmful and runs a scan. Computer is also a bit sluggish.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

You did not attach the log from SUPERantispyware ;)

    It can be located here:
Please go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following software:

    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 16

You have Spybot Search and Destroy's "Teatimer" feature active which I will need for you to disable otherwise it will hinder the fix.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Update your Firefox to the most current version by using the updates tab within the browser.

If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this, & also attach logs from both TDSSKiller and MBRCheck.exe.

Let me know how things are running now!

What a pleasure that was to follow!

Ok, so I had attached the correct SuperAntispyware (See below in Post #3) in a previous post,

    1) Removed the 2 Java Programs
    2) Disabled TeaTimers
    3) Ran TDSSKiller (log attached)
    4) Ran MBRCheck (Couldn't do the right click copy and paste so I did a screen print and attached it, hope that is ok?)
    5) Updated Firefix
    6) Ran HJT and fixed the 2 lines indicated (the 1st was not something I set purposely)
    7) Used Combofix as indicated (log attached)
    8) Reinstalled Java
    9) Ran MGTools (log attached)

I will see how things go, can you let me know how things look on your end and what you saw in the logs that you got rid of?

I now am running Avira with ZoneAlarm, is that a good combo to prevent this?

    Thanks for all your assistance!

Hi ya. Whilst I review your logs, address this question:

Locked service(xwgvvnpf) - User select action: Skip <--- Did you indeed fix this in the end as it states that you skipped. ?

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

ok, ran Combo with the text provided, ran CC cleaner and then MGTools. Attached are the Combo and MGtools files.

Thinks seem to be running smoothly, Avira isn't picking anything up and no redirects.

Let me know if things look good from your side!

Thanks and have a good night!

    Good!
I think your machine is clean again now!
You're welcome. You too. It's half three in the morning here so I had better get to sleep soon :-D

Delete this empty directory by using Windows Explorer:
    • c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Update
      [*]

    Run ccleaner.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
