Hi, I followed the Read Me and WP Cleaning procedures as best I could but still having problems. Thank you for any help you can give. I get the message "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close." The computer will run very slowly and eventually end in a blue screen until I turn it off by the power button. I have attached the first set of logs. Thanks!

    Hello, dnafunk

One of your MGLogs is missing important data - did you wait until MGTools.exe was completely finished before closing it?

    Step 1:
Please download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Step 2:
You have two anti-virus programs installed:
    avast! Internet Security
    AVG 2011

It appears AVG2011 is broken so I would suggest you uninstall it and run the AVGRemover(32bit) from the below link > reboot > run it again:
    http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools

    Step 3:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 4:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 5:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 6:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 7:
Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

    Step 8:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 9:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • MBRCheck.txt

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

Thank you for looking at this.
As far as the incomplete logs....I didn't think so, but certainly possible. I let it run and left the computer and the windows were all closed when I came back, so I assumed it was finished. But apparently not?

    1. I ran TDSSkiller and "cure" was selected. I chose "Reboot Now"

    2. I thought I did uninstall AVG when I switched to Avast, so not sure why it is still there, but followed your instructions. I went to Add or Remove Programs, but AVG was not on the list. I ran AVG remover, rebooted and ran it again.

    3. Found Java (TM) Updaye 21 and removed it.
Found My Way search assistant, tried to remove and got this error message: "RUNDLL Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\MyWaySA\srchAsDe\1.bin\desrcas.dll The specified module could not be found."

    4. Done.

    5. I might have messed something up here. I thought combo fix was done because the little window went away, but then other windows popped up telling me what combofix was doing. So, I might have run that script before Combo fix finshed running the first time. Should I run it again?

    6. Done.
    7. Done.
    8. Done.
    9. Done.

    Two Logs attached.

The computer completely froze after running the procedures the first time and crashed repreatedly. I got finally got it to start and reboot cleanly. Since then it has actually gone 24 hours without crashing, which is the best it has been in weeks, so maybe this worked. I have been able to run through these procedures without it crashing. ComboFix did take a while to run, but maybe that was normal.

I am running my laptop in selective start-up mode, and it was also infected, but not as many problems as the desktop that is the subject of this post. Should I have the laptop disconnected from the router until I work on cleaning that one? Any chance for the problem to move back to this machine?

Thanks so much for your help on fixing this.

Your MGLogs.zip was complete that time, dnajunk. :)

Other than the tools our guide instructed you to save there, I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ insert user account here ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.
    Step 1:
Let's do a couple of things to make sure that it's gone. Please download Your Uninstaller! 2010 7.3.2010.33 to see if it locates it to uninstall.

    Step 2:
Now we'll compose a script to "Locate Files"

Please highlight, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the text inside the quote into a new Notepad document.
Save it on your Desktop as file type "All Files" (NOT as "Text Documents") and name it FindMe.bat
    Close Notepad.
Double click FindMe.bat on your Desktop.
A window will open and close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A new file icon named look.txt will appear on your desktop. Please attach the look.txt file to your next reply.

    Your laptop issues should be the subject of a new malware thread, if you wish help in cleaning it. It probably would be wise to disconnect it from the router and connect it directly to your internet connection, since the type of malware infection of the laptop is unknown at this point. { Better safe than sorry }

    Step 3:
Using Windows Explorer - navigate to and delete:
    • C:\MGlogs(1).zip <--- file
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jupdate-1.6.0_22-b04.log <--- file
    • C:\$AVG <--- folder

    Step 4:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Step 5:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

*We're almost finished with our cleaning. Please attach the look.txt file to your next reply.

    Thanks!
Cleaned up the desktop. Only things there now are shortcuts, Internet Explorer, ComboFix, a folder called "config" (no idea what it is - should I delete?) and a document called settings.dat (don't know what that is either - delete?)

    1. "Your Uninstaller" did not find My Way Search Assistant. It did find something called Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) and says it is corrupted. Should I uninstall it?

    2. Done.
    3. Done.
    4. Done.
    5. Done.

    Look.txt log attached.

    Thanks again!

If the folder config contains a file named "FILIST.QFI" - it's from your Quicken 2008 program. The document "settings.dat" is very generic and if you wish - you can upload the file for testing: http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/url

The corrupted Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool is an issue that should be investigated further in our Software Forum

    *The Look.txt log attachment failed.

You can run C:\MGtools\RemMWS.bat to remove the remainders of My Way .

    Thanks!
I keep trying to upload look.txt, but it keeps failing. I ran FindMe.bat again, it took a long time, created another look.txt on the desktop, but I could not upload it. I looked at it in Notebad, and it is blank.

I ran C:\MGtools\RemMWS.bat. A window opened for a short time and closed again. How do I tell if it worked?

Any more steps I should perform?

    You're welcome.

We can look for any signs of it remaining in a new MGLogs.zip:

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * How is your machine running, otherwise?

    ;)

Your logs look good and "My Way Search Assistant" is gone, dnajunk!

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
