This sucker is worse that Michael Myers in the Halloween series.

I need some help / advice to rid myself of the remnants of this piece of s@*t DeepFreeze that are left on my machine <Windoze XP>. I need to move forward!!

Dumb me - DLed Deep_Freeze_62587.exe and without a lot of study, went ahead and installed it - BIGGG mistake. <Hey - sounded like a kool app.> Did not actually use it - just clicked it once to extract or whatever it does.

So - noticed 2 very peculiar things after a reboot. 1 - Stuff I had just installed was not only not on the machine, neither were their associated DL files. 2 - Noticed that stuff I had deleted from my machine was back. Now over the years, I have dealt with some heady stuff, but this was perplexing. Tardy, I did my due-diligence and discovered the dark side of this program. Reviewed dozens of sites, including Faronics, and scores of posts.

1 - Follow the instructions from Faronics as to un-installing their POS. After requisite reboot, on my Desktop there was their st00pid frozen pig icon. Also their main sys proggy deepfrz.sys was still there. Registry had ~ 6 innocuous entries. The rest including their uninstaller were gone.

2 - In regular windows, right click both files Delete, reboot, still there.

3 - In regular windows, send both files to Recycle & Empty, reboot, still there.

4 - Regular windows, right click both files Unlocker, reboot, still there.

5 - In regular windows, run both files thru Heidi Eraser, reboot, still there.

    6 - Repeat Steps 2 - 5 in Safe mode

    7 - Try KillBox - no change

8 - Bootsafe, go to DOS (or command prompt) and use DEL there. No change.

9 - Nope, did not lower myself to use a Restore. Actually all Restores prior to DF installation mysteriously vanished. Imagine that...

10 - Yep - tried move the Bios date ahead several months in conjunction with above.

So - at this point remaining options are:

    1 - Beg for help here. 2 - Reformat. 3 - Horseshoe magnet 4 - Screwdriver

    5 - 44 Magnum.

I have to admit that the d00dz who wrote this warez are definely 3l33t. But I am really starting to get p@#*ed off.:cry

Sorry about this but Deep Freeze is not considered malware and nothing we do here will remove this. It need to be properly put into Thawed Mode and uninstalled. Their instructions should explain how to do this and it requires a password. If you hacked around trying to remove it manually before trying a proper uninstall, I do not know what the effects would be. You need to talk to Faronics. I also recommend you look at some of the questions and answers in the below link which may be helpful.

Resolved - Not by Me: Re: Freaking DeepFreeze will NOT die

[Been awhile - had some major problems including illness.]

Sorry I posted this here, but many would likely consider this program not unmalware. Anyway, it took me longer to clean this up than any other malware I have had in over 20 years. Including conflicker.

Thanks for your post. Before I stopped by here, I read the entire Faronics web site including all DL docs, pdfs, etc. Twice. And not all but a lot from Google searches. I had also contacted Faronics and not heard from them in OVER a week. I needed that PC.

I followed their instructions VERBATIM and that is why I contacted them and posted here. That is one POWERFUL piece of SW. If the d00dz over at Goverment Security can't hack it, you know it is one tough cookie.

Anyway - I finally heard from Faronics. I dealt with 3 different people over the course of 4 days + a week-end and it took about 8 hours for them to figure out how THEIR SW had botched on the uninstall. They thanked me very much for bringing it to their attention. Heh. And I thanked them.

Any SW like this that has the power do do what it does should have more warnings at Install time. OBTW - we are going to RUN this app. Do your know what it will do? Are You Sure. Really? I mean seriously.. And so on. The Install not only installs it but it RUNS it without asking or telling you.

Any way - problem resolved. And everything as back to normal before over 10days of use. Oh and it also deposited nearly 1/4 million hidden link files on my HD. That remains for another post here or elsewhere.

In addition to learning a whole bunch about NTFS file structure, link files, autocompletes, and some other really cleaver stuff, I certainly learned my lesson.

    Thanks & cheers - JoW
