Hi all... I would appreciate any opinions... I am stuck wtih using a free anti-virus software as I can't afford to purchase one...

I have tried MSE, but I'm not crazy about it as I have gotten at least two viruses while having it installed... and yes, I had automatic updates turned on so it was up to date...,

I currently have Avast loaded and I like it, but after 30 days (26) now I can't buy it...,

    Please opine

    Happy to opine!
I read recently that MS Security Essentials is now very good. AVG has always been good, and I have had no troubles with Avira Antivir, which I have been using for some time (all free versions).

That's OK, the free version that it will revert to after 30 days is just fine. You should also be running an anti-malware app alongside your anti-virus app. This will help you have more complete coverage. I recommend Malwarebytes anti-malware, which also has a free version. You can get it here:

Avira is very good as well (and free). I've been using that for years with no issues.

Also, do take a look at this thread written by one of our Malware Removal experts: How to Protect yourself from malware!

You should also have anti spyware installed.

    Hi

I have to agree with Laura's post above and the link is great for protecting your PC, I have to also state that MSE is good an I have it on a laptop and netbook and its listed nothing, however malware is generally found due to bad sufring habbits.

If an AV finds malware and blocks it then its working ok.

Avast is free if you go that route and all you need to do is register a email address to action the licence, I use Avast on my desktops and it works well, but as stated you need to safe surf as well to minimise the risk of malware.

Thanks to everyone for the opinions... I didn't know there was a forever free version of avast... I'll use the link... thanks
FYI, I ran the complete MG malware 2 weeks ago to clean my lap top and I always have malwarbytes installed on both, but this time I couldn't run the MG malware because I could not get the desktop puter on line.... it was blocked and I tried everything I knew, everything everyone on here suggested and everything I could read about the issue online...
I finally just gave up and did a complete recovery and I'm still updating as I type this.
BTW... it really isn't my surfing habits, and when I say this I get promoted to paranoid of the year status, but I think someone has me targeted.
I can't say why right now as the investigation is pending, but I think they know who I am... LMAO.. now having said that, I don't consider myself in any danger, cept for the A holes bombarding our router with attacks.
Never the less... I'll download the 'free' avast and keep on pluggin' away...
Thanks again to everyone... viva el MG
