If your after Memory Managment software then Cacheman is what your after, I dont use it now as XP handles memory fairly well but when I had 98/ME cacheman worked well in adjusting the memory and cache settings.

    Hi JWH532

I use "FreeRam XP Pro v1.4" which is free and has alot of options. I am running Windows XP Home and it works quite well. You can get it here:

Guys, jwh532 is using Windows ME not XP. Try this google for 18000+ hits. Bazza

Jwh, lots listed above for Win ME, not sure if they are free.

I use Analog X MaxMem http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=307 in 98SE, should work in ME. I usually run it twice, one after the other, to get max mem available, then shut it down as it can sometimes interfere with running programs as it runs automatically every 5 minutes irrespective of what you are doing. Bit of a bummer, sometimes. My laptop shows 52% avaiable at load of MaxMem, then goes to 74% free, then run it again to get around 88-90% free. Then I shut it down. My laptop has 288mb Ram installed. I guess/hope this is a good place to add (if not please redirect me) a related question.
From the below list of (Microsoft) memory tools I see 'FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40' (labeled 'HOT') on the 'MajorGeeks' list of downloads of memory tools but not the other 2.
Is there a particular reason for this and/or are there any better tools for helping with memory management for an XPpro system with only 256MB of physical memory?
I think I had some bad luck (to put it mildly) with 'MaxMem' (it worked fine with my W98 OS) and the XP OS so Id like to find some other option, and since the below programs are from MS I would assume they should be helpful (as opposed to dangerous).
    Thoughts?

    Microsoft Windows Memory Diagnostic
It tests the Random Access Memory (RAM) on your computer for errors
    640KB | Windows All | Freeware

    FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40
Freeware app that defragments and frees up your system's RAM
    0.54MB | Windows All | Freeware

    Ozone RAM Optimizer 3.0
Uses your computer's RAM more efficiently
    0.32MB | Windows All | Freeware

It may be called FreeRAM XP Pro but it works on Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, and XP.

True Insomniac, this applies to Cacheman ( Free for home use BUT has a $10 fee if you like the app and can afford the $10 ) too as there are two versions of this app one specifically for NT/2k/XP varients.

as to AKMs question FreeRAM XP Pro gets a "HOT" rating as its a free app and you know geeks like "free" stuff, plus its good if you have a low ram system at freeing up ram that some closed apps hold onto, XP does as I have said manage memory vastly better than 9x OS's and I have found that I dont seem to have the same memory issues from when I used 95/98/ME where cacheman was very useful is freeing up lost memory.

MS Memory Diagnostic app is not a memory managment app but more an app to find out if your ram has failing modules, similar to MemTest

    Thanks for the reply/s.
Am trying 'FreeRAM XP Pro' and it seems to be doing fine... anything that doesnt totally disable my PC is 'fine' in my scale of great to lousy.
BTW MGs seems like a pretty good forum and Ive tried a few.
Id like to be able to help, but Im one of those folks who probably knows a little (enough to be dangerous) about a lot but not a lot about a little... but maybe something will come along Ill be able to offer my 2cents or so.
    Thanks again.

Just make sure you have it switched off while you play games. Why? The preassure is put on and the ram freerer gets busy thus making you lag and sometimes completely freaze.

Makes sense, thanks for the heads-up.
Fortunately I never use the PC for 'games' but my son occasionaly gets on it for a little Texas Holdm... that probably is not going to tax the system much.
So, I think Im safe, but a good point in case of future related problems.
    Thanks again.
