I need to convert a few music CDs into mp3 files.
What are some preferred free programs for the Win PC?

I just figured out the program i was trying to find was EAC (Exact Audio Copy),
Which I've heard is a good ripping program (better then WMP?).

A secondhand recommendation, but a friend regards himself as a bit of an audiophile and uses Exact Audio Copy.
Can’t tell you why though, and I can’t remember the last time I ripped a CD

I use FreeRIP. Works for me on XP and 7.
This doesn't burn, it just creates mp3 files.

Jet Audio- Cowon Media Center. Search on MG Home Page for links and threads. Some say adware. It does connect for album art, will look for lyrics also. But it does great at ripping, burning and playing. On a home or car stero it sounds fairly good.
