I have huge video files that I don't want to lose quality. Is there a way to compress them and keep them compressed on my computer until I use them?

I don't know how the compression process works, so if anyone can help me understand if what I want is possible that would be nice.

There's a program called DVDShrink that does just that. It compresses the files and you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference in playback quality.

It does come via a download manager that may offer to install third party software. So, be observant during the download.

The very definition of CoDec is Compressor/Decompressor.. to shink the video you're gonna loose some quality, but since you're look to "store" the files for later, you might want to use 7-zip. It has the highest file compression rates supposedly.
option one encode the video and loose some quality
option two zip the file with 7 zip and see how much space you can save.

Do you recommend a freeware program for that?
