Hello Forum, Once again I have the need to ask for help.

This time, I cleaned up an old HP Pavilion N5270, model (F2363M) Notebook. I am going to give this to a friend that needs a computer and they're having some financial prob's, so this hopefully will fulfill their needs for now.

Anyway, after the install (from the :crap - y, original install of ME) of XP Pro, the computer appears from the get go to be even slower than I remember earlier! This notebook has been sitting for over a year with no use, but I don't think it was ever so slow! Starting & Closing = Drags. When a window closes, (even worse with multiple windows) it drags very slowly in a cascade from top to bottom. Full screen window will take about 20 seconds to cascade closed!!! I thought maybe I had conflicting drivers, or missing drivers, or completed a bad installation of the OS? Then I remembered it only had 128mb install of ram & cpu is P3,700mhz. So I went online & found 2 sticks of memory to bring it to 512. (should be here anyday now)

Question: Would this major slowdown be because of the new OS over the old ME? Even though the specs (of XP Pro) say that it should be OK? I am hoping that increasing ram by almost 3x, should be a major benefit.

So, back to on post: I then thought maybe I got some kind of Infection? I did an Mbam scan a few days ago & it found some infected items? I did an SAS scan last night & it also found 2 items!

I will follow the instructions in the sticky, but thought I would just forward the reports of the above first, because this is a "Fresh Install" - after partitioning & formatting. I am thinking that maybe they were false positives? Or maybe I did get infected during minor surfing to obtain the necessary Computer Utilities that I normally use?

So, Just to let you know, I will proceed as advised by the forum helpers - you guys are great !!!

    Thanks!

One item appears to be a false positive while the rest of the items ( in MBAM ) are from system restore folders. ( You need to toggle system restore to flush out those restore points.)

No, you can not run XP Pro or home with only 128 megs!! Even 512 will be very slow. Ideally, you should have 2 gigs of memory, though this notebook may not handle it.

    Hi Tim

Thanks for such a quick reply! :)

I will do that & make sure the restore points are cleared then reset. :)

Was ME more optimum for this notebook over XP Pro? That was such a bad OS.

I have an unused copy of Win98 sp2 (?) Would that be better? Whadyya Think?

And yes, 2 gigs is too much. The max this notebook for the cpu is 512mb of ram.

I appreciate the help. Should I do anything else after cleaning & flushing out the restore points and resetting?

Oh, 1 thing; for curiosity sake... was the false positive from Everest? SAS said it was a Trojan.

    Have a great weekend :cool

It will run XP with 512, but it will be really slow. And I would never recommend win98 for anyone. It is too outdated to find software that will run on that system. I can only suggest that you find an AV program that uses as little resources as possible. This will always be a marginal system.

    Thanks.

Any suggestions as to which AV to look at. Have you found one to be less "Resources" hungry over another.

If I can ask you to rate per your humble opinion rolleyes,

    • Avast! Free
    • Avira Anti-Vir
    • AVG Free
    • Kaspersky

Or should I invest in a commercial one?

Also, since you say that this computer is too old & too slow, I have upgraded to XP Pro, Upgraded to SP3, & also have installed & upgraded to IE8, I am sure I have loaded probably too much for the 700 mhz processor to compute decently. Is it possible to completely delete IE altogether? Will there be ramifications if I do this? Is Firefox less taxing on the system over Chrome? or maybe Opera? Please advise. Thanks a whole lot!!!

    PS...
Please let me know if this should be re-directed into a different thread, maybe an administrator can move it or just tell me to start a new thread in the proper forum. Sorry if I did get off focus - :-o

I would suggest you try Avast. And no, you can't completely remove IE as it is embedded in the OS. The other choice might be to try Opera as your browser. But all of these choices really would depend on how well the system runs with them installed. You may have to test a few applications to see which bogs down the system.

If you want further advice on this, then do post in the software forum. ;)
