Whats up guys. Alright well I'm building a computer, as I've built at least 3 from the ground up(been a couple years since I've built or even opened one up though) I figured it'd be a piece of cake. I'm gonna try and list as many things as I can as I'm not positive what went wrong. I was assured the components would all work together(reassured really as I had made a list of exactly what went with what). I got an Aspire Dreamer X-II case which comes with a 350w psu. I put in a gigabyte mobo, i915PL chipset and installed a 3.2 Ghz P4. I hooked everything up including harddrive, cdrom, geforce 6600GT, and ram(DDR 1GB 3200 Dual KByte (2x512) 400MHz). I pressed the power button, and the computer didn't turn on but the fans did, and they were kinda jumpy. I thought wtf and i unplugged everything right away except for cpu and ram, then (7hrs later) replugged in power cables to the motherboard, started it up, same thing but fans slowed down a little. I unplugged cpu and double checked connections, turned it on again(only ram and mobo connected to power or anything for that matter) and after about 2 seconds a chip near the ram fried. I took out the mobo and put in back in the box to take back tomorrow, but I don't really want to make the same mistake twice. I might even take back the ram and get a i915P board for the HD audio. I'd greatly appreciate any insight. Thanks a lot. Oh and btw I'm gonna pick up a 20-pin to 24-pin adapter for the psu to mobo connection, but as I understand it isn't really necessary.

Hi m8,first Id throw away that psu and buy a decent one,a great 350 psu would only just be enough for a p4 3.2 and 6600gt and that aint a great one"the ones that come with case never are"The make and specs of it would be helpfull.

2 other power connectors you may not be familiar with are the 12v atx power that plugs in near the cpu"square 4 pin" and the video card power"a standard molex that plugs into the back of the vid card"

You also didnt mention any beep codes,I would guess you havnt plugged in your speaker to the mobo, check before you try again they can be really helpfull at times like this.

IMHO I would take back that cpu aqnd board and exchange it for an amd one,one reason because I'm an amd fan boy,but the other main reason the 3.2 p4 "presscot" core's are plauged with heat problems

look to the right and see how many worried p4 owners have viewed these threads for advice.

With the standard cooling thay can be hard to keep under 70 degrees c and over that they start to throttle, they slow down so as not to damage themselves, you may not even notice while using it,but its performance lost that you have payed for.

hey guys thanks for the insight. i had plugged the pc speaker in, but it didn't make a sound. i figured something was faulty, but i ended taking back everything except the video card(processor, ram, mobo, case/psu) and got an amd athlon 64 3200+ and a mobo that supports sli, and now have yet to buy a psu or case. thanks again
