Gateway laptop has no sound

    Friends: My Gateway laptop MT 6705 has no sound. I uninstalled and reinstalled the audio driver SigmaTel HD Audio Codec yet same problem. I used System Restore twice, same result. No sound either from headsets. Nothing muted. Gateway offers little help beyond pointing me to the right driver. Windows Vista Premium. Thanks for any help.

    Is it possible the sound chip died?
    Try a linux live CD and see if you have sound - then we will know if it is a possible hardware failure.

    plodr: Thanks for the response. I tried a Knoppix Cd and I could not get any sound from the speakers either.
