hey folks, I'm having a serious problem finding an ethernet driver for a Gateway Solo 5300. It seems gateway don't list that particular driver for the solo with windows xp (sp3). I've looked in alot of my old haunts that have been reliable until now. I installed a new OS, and all the drivers but the ethernet were automatically installed. Help

    3) In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
    4) Select "No, not this time" and click Next
    5) Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
    6) Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7)Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
    8) Click OK and click Next
    9) Wait while the Wizard installs the software

Hey Komodo, I've downloaded the driver, but the device manager doesn't show the ethernet device. It had one before I reinstalled, so what happened to it. I've never run across this before. I assumed this was always installed but without the driver. What now? Do you think the network adapter may be bad. I just noticed there are no lights with my cable plugged in.

Try going into your BIOS (Reboot and hit either F1 or F2) (should tell you which on start-up then arrow through and look for Onboard Ethernet..if disabled..Enable it...hit F10 then Y and reboot...If it was disabled windows should detect it on boot-up

Not 100% sure but might be under "Onboard Peripherals" under Network

I'm in bios now and it's not showing much of anything. I've tried (main-advanced-security-power-and boot). It's not showing peripherials at all

Komodo, I just went into the system info and in the system summary it is showing the network adapter name as RAS Async Adapter and it says it is installed. So why is it showing nowhere else?

Do you happen to have The System Restoration Kit CD that came with the computer?

    If so try this
1 Place Disc 1 of the System Restoration Kit into your CD/DVD drive. The
System Restoration Kit program starts. Go to Step 5.
    - OR -
If the program does not start automatically, go to Step 2.
2 Click Start, then select Run. The Run dialog box opens.
3 In the Open text box, type D:\RUNMENU.EXE (where D is the drive letter
    of your CD/DVD drive).
4 Click OK. The System Restoration Kit program starts.
5 If the Welcome to the System Restoration Kit window opens, close it by
    clicking OK.
    6 Click the Reinstall tab.
7 If there is a Find More button at the bottom of the window, complete
the list of available device drivers by clicking Find More and following the
    on-screen instructions.
8 Click Automatic Installation, then select multiple device drivers to reinstall.
    - OR -
Click Manual Installation, then select a single device driver to reinstall.
    9 Click Install.
10 Follow any additional on-screen instructions. Depending on the device
driver you are reinstalling, you may only need to restart your computer
to complete the installation. However, if a setup wizard opens when you
restart your computer, follow the on-screen instructions

Alright I'm back. Yes, device manager shows the network adapter when I click on view, and no I don't have restoration disk: bought at yard sale for $20.00.

Komodo, I've reinstalled with another disk; same results. I downloaded Everest; it don't show a network adapter either. All it shows is the modem. You do know that Everest has been discontinued;right? It will not copy to my computer. It only works from the flash drive

Komodo, do you think this laptop may have been hit by a power surge? That could have fried the ethernet if it hit the line(maybe?)
