Long story short: my Geforce2 fan was making horrible noises, so I took it off the heatsync and cleaned it out - now it doesn't run at all. Is this a big problem? I don't want to overheat the thing. I've been running int without a fan for about an hour or so.

The card won't really even be under that much load. I don't really do much gaming anymore at all. Mostly just using Office & programming applications.

    Is this safe or not?

I could be wrong, but I think most Geforce 2 video cards dont have fans.

If it does need one, without it it will get hot, then it will either run hot or Fry.
You can buy another Gforce 2 at Newegg for $30, it doesnt have a fan.

If you already ran it for a hour and still have video, ya may be OK.
