    Hello, I am new to this so bare with me please! I have a Dell Dimension L667r with windows XP. I am trying to play the sims 2 on the computer but it keeps telling me that I cannot support directX 9.0c compatible drive adaptors. I have bought a GeForce2 MX400 PCI-64MB DDR TV and I was wondering if I install this card, will I be able to play that game? Thanks so much for your help!! :confused:

    No, I don't think so... AFAIK, that card does not support DirectX 9 extensions.

    do you have a video card suggestion for me then? I dont need a new high tech card because that is really the only high tech game I have right now. Anything in the 50-70 dollar price range?

    I take that back... I just looked at the specs, and Geforce 2 cards are supported, although I don't know how well it will play. If it's possible, you might want to take that card back to the store you bought it from and get a Radeon 9550. The difference in price shouldn't be more than $50:

    "The system requirements for The Sims 2 are as follows:

    * 800 MHz processor
    * 256 MB RAM
    * Windows(R) XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000 Operating System.
    * At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
    * A T&L-capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM.

    Supported video cards:

    ATI Radeon(TM) series (7000 or better)

    * VE series (see note below)
    * 7000, 7200, 7500
    * 8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
    * 9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
    * X300, X600, X800

    NVIDIA(R) Quadro(TM) series

    * Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

    NVIDIA GeForce series (GeForce2 and better)

    * GeForce 2
    * GeForce 3, 3 Ti
    * GeForce 4, 4 Ti, MX 420, 440
    * GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
    * GeForce 6600, 6800

    Intel(R) Extreme Graphics (see note below)

    * 82845, 82865, 82915

    NOTE: If you have a non-T&L capable video card, such as Intel Extreme Graphics or Radeon VE series, then you need at least a 2.0 GHz processor."

    There is a very easy way to tell if your system supports it.

    Download THIS tool and it will tell you.

    Disclaimer: I have never used it, but it's reported as legitimate.

    Don't run it from it's zip container or it won't work.

    You need to unzip to a folder, like your desktop.

    That card or system in general will not run the game.

    I have a pretty weak system now (My spare system)that my relatives play the game on and that has a GeForce 5200 FX on it...And well all low settings...and it's very very hard to play.

    Such a demanding game considering the graphics arent that spectacular. I think a radeon 9550 will play it fine but don't expect silky smooth. I've never seen the Sims 2 silky smooth. :)

    It's minimum video card requirements etc is a GeForce2.

    How is that demanding? You just need a PC built before 1920.

    I find that those "minimum system requirements" boxes are really loads of junk. What they mean by "minimum system requirements" isn't really what you need to play the game at an acceptable rate, but just to get it to run, which is ridiculous. They should have more accurate minimum requirements for all games, I think, as the ones they currently recommend for most games are right on the edge of playable.

    Isn't that the definition of minimum?

    You're 110% right. ;)

    isn't it impossible to be 110% right? :)

    The Sims 2 is a strange one though. It seems to eat up anything you throw at it and just crank out the same low FPS. How come it runs perfectly well on a PS2? A 300mhz processor with 32MB ram and only 6.2 GFlops.

    No, that's the minimum requirement.

    It may run OK on PS2 because there is only ONE combination of hardware, with no other software and settings etc.

    And it's not Micro$$oft. :)
