umm well office xp isn't an operating system. I would suggest something easy like Windows XP or something.

    Well.

If you're looking for the easiest and most versatile, Windows XP hands down.

I personally like Linux better. And after trying many distros (Redhat, Mandrake, Mepis, Suse, Knoppix, and Gentoo), I have decided that Gentoo is the winner. It took me about 4 tries, but I think I have it. At least it is working with everything. Except the scanner portion of my Lexmark x75, that is.

If you're a newbie to Linux, you might want to try one of the pre-packaged distros such as Mandrake or Redhat. Then when you're ready, tackle Gentoo.

Of course, most Linux distros are free to download and have lots of neat programs available (most are free). Windows does not.

If yo're looking for a 'hands-off' OS I would suggest winXP or win2000 -if you're a geek then grab a linux distro.

Except for a couple of reinstalls every month for blue screen errors, Windows XP SP2 will be good for a starter. When you are sure you are doing good with the Windows and is ready for a REAL GOOD, VERSATILE and POWERFUL OS, migrate to Linux.

I've never had to reinstall XP for anything other than what I caused, and knew I caused.

I totally agree, I have never had a problem with XP or SP2, It is rock solid stable and I have never had one crash because of the OS.

I was pretty good at crashing my old Windows 98 SE, but I've yet to crash my new Windows XP SP2, lmao

Another vote for XP here, and Pro if you can afford it  As for crashes, the only time XP has crashed on me has been when I had bad RAM in my PC, since I have fixed memory problems, solid as can be asked for with Windows :) I am just now planning on playing with Linux. Doing some studying first then I'm gonna install on another HD and dual boot. If anyone reading this can elaborate on Linux info for me, I am very interested in a PM.

I love Linux and run Fedora Core3 64 bit myself, I would suggest however that XP Pro may be more appropriate in this particular case.

You can always try Linux at a later date.

Try finding a Live Distro like Knoppix which runs off the CD and will give you a flavour.

XP Pro does take a bit of effort to break so is pretty good for a beginner

    Just sayin'

    :)

All that being said. It is far easier to crash Linux. Like I just did. I un-merged something I shouldn't. No safeguards, like MS has. Now I can't get into KDE. Oh well. Means I have to play around with it. Which is really what I like anyway.[IMG]

Has usual everybody is jumping the gun ....

What kind of PC spec ???

    If you get a p2 233(win98SE) or latest pentium 3.8 G (XP)...

Get an AMD Athlon and don't worry about it. XP runs fine on all, even older ones, unless you go so old that there's dinosaur shit on it, then you have other issues.

More like, you are jumping the gun.

When is the last time someone had a computer built with a P2 233? Read the first post again.

    'nuff said.

    Hello Spawn,
I'll let the others eat each other up while I sneak in and put in my $0.02 :D :

You are about 13-14 years old, right?
and with a name like SpawnDemon I can tell you like gaming and you will use this system to play games as well as some other stuff?
    ...so far so good?

Even if your dad uses halfway decent yet new components, the system should be more than adequate to install Windows XP which will be easy to use, even as a starter and also it would be the most suitable for your overall needs. Linux is very good too but for a new user it may not be the best option, also it doesn't have nearly as much software and games for it...

Yes, this is what I was referring to, hahaha, anyway, my first PC was a P2@266mhz about 8 years ago and it would barely handle 98. I immidiately upgraded to an Athlon@333mhz and it flew for years, even when I installed XP Pro. I have an 800mhz and a 2.53ghz now and love them all. I'll never buy another Pentium, or any Intel product again. As for OS, I'm gonna install Linux and play with it within the next couple of weeks and from what I've been hearing so far from the knowledgable folks is that I will most likely come to the same conclusion about Windows and Microsoft.

Actually, that 333mhz would have been a K6-2, not an Athlon :)

RE:Actually, that 333mhz would have been a K6-2, not an Athlon.

You're absolutely correct, my bad, it was a long time ago and I had someone order it for me, at the time, I knew nothing of computers, just following advice of someone who did. I got my 800 myself and just thought all top AMD processors were Athlons  At any rate, I love em and highly recommend to any/everyone I can.
