    Hi,

My OS is Windows XP Pro. I have a program/file that is zipped and I cannot open it. Can someone recommend a good, free program I can use to unzip this program/file? Thank you.

Windows will open zip files without third party assistance, and if it can't then maybe the file is not actually a zip-compressed file, despite its name.

You should also take a look at your file associations, to check what association is currently assigned to zip. The default for XP is Compressed (zipped) folders, as in this pic from XP Home. You can access Folder Options thro' Control Panel.

A friend put me onto 7Zip (FREE) several years ago and I've used nothing else since then.
I've never found any compression program that is so easy to use, to create a self extracting compressed file.

Give it a try. Did I mention, it's 100% FREE!

There are several really good file compression utils around, but the point I was trying to get across to the OP is that if Windows can't open it, then it's probably a corrupt or invalid zipfile that nothing will open.

@jamesfg - if poss, try and get another copy.

I totally agree with you earthling but, If it's corrupt or invalid, dosen't it need scanning first before unzipping or opening !

Any file you acquire from download, email attachment, mate's flash drive, etc, etc, should be scanned before opening. What's different about this one?

Nobody had pointed that out, had they, so i thought i would, and jamesfg just might of gone ahead and opened without scanning !

My personal favorite zip/unzip type app is TUGzip (download link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html). It's fast, really fast, can unzip just about every compressed file type (including ACE, RAR, ZIP, 7Z, etc., and even image files like ISO, BIN, IMG, etc), it merges in to the right-click menu for easy use, and it's 100% free and compatible with all Windows version up thru Win7 (well, I haven't tried it with Win95/98, but I've used it with WinME, 2000, XP, Vista, Win7). When installing, click 'Next' all the way through, at the end, there will be a little checkbox for "Launch TUGzip now". Go ahead and launch it, and click 'Next' all the way thru again. At the final screen (the one with the 'Finish' button), you'll see a column on the left side of the window, click the 'Select All' button under the coulmn, then click 'Finish'. A Windows Explorer type window will open, close it. Now you can simply right click on your file and use one of the several TUGzip options; they're the ones with the green arrows. I usually use the 2nd upward pointing green arrow when extracting a file. It will extract the file to a folder of the same name..... I hope this wordy and somewhat tiresome post of mine helps, at least a little bit!
    LOL

mmm .... zip is supposed to be a standard file format, but it seems not all zips are born equal ;) It isn't good news if some file compression programs are creating zips that cannot be read in Windows. Many more ppl will be having jamesfg's problem.

Well I can exonerate 7-Zip from this. Zipfiles it creates are readable in Windows.
