OK, here goes.... I have googled the you know what out of "how to permanently turn off the new google instant on" and have tried every idea thrown out there. Nothing is working and it is one source of aggravation to me... maybe not to others... but I hate it. So, it has to be a cookie being thrown in there by google when you close you browser when the browser is set to delete all cookies. The settings option to turn off instant on works fine until you re-open your browser. Is there a solution out there or is it hopeless?

Have a link? I've never heard of Google Instant On so before I attempt to help, I'll need to know what this is.

There's a drop down menu right next to the search field that turns it off (as seen in my attached picture). Have you tried that? It turns it off permanently for me.

Does the same here with Firefox.

Try disabling the cleaning of cookies upon exit, see if the preferences are saved. If so, you might be able to dig deeper, set up some exceptions.

    Ahh,

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Q:
Can I turn off Google Instant?

    A:
If you don't want to see results as you type, you can turn off Google Instant by clicking the link next to the search box on any search results page, or by visiting your Preferences page.

Adding this in addition to Laura's post.

It looks annoying. I don't think I would want it on either! :-D

Yes I have tried it. Turns out that if you disable the clearing of your cookies when exiting a browser the setting will stick. If you clear cookies when your browser closes, like we do, then it will default back to instant on. Thank you!

I had to turn 'instant' off to be able to get more than 10 results per page. Seems if you leave instant turned on you can't change any search preferences.

OK...here is what I did.... I went to Tools in IE and to Internet Options. Clicked on General tab and then unchecked box for "delete browsing history etc". I then unchecked the Delete Temp files under the Advanced Tab. Went to the Google Settings and clicked on "do not use instant on". That works and I get auto fill which is great because it gives you other ideas....but no instant on....Then I run my cCleaner to delete cookies and internet files and whammo they're gone, instant is gone.. and I am now sane!

    Hang around.
We can cure you of that too.

Glad you got it. The deletion of browsing caches is more complex than just cleaning your tracks - there are other background functions that occur during the process.

It is actually great - much faster than the "normal" Google results over the last few months.

In the research work we do, seeing the auto fill (suggestions) listed below as you type aids us in providing additional ideas for our search process. The instant on hangs then pops up the selections.... just doesn't work for us.
