Google Redirect Virus annoying and exhausting

Over the past week or so the Redirect Virus has popped up. Google search links forward to ads and such, gmail and mozilla started crashing. At first I tried to combat it with different anti-virus software (AdAware, Avast) but nothing helped.

I noticed my computer wasn't going to standby when I left the room and the other day found it frozen on the wallpaper with nothing else available and kind of freaked out.

So I've followed all the Malware Removal steps and Windows XP Cleaning instructions and every little step has helped, most significantly the removal of a trojan. Before I found majorgeeks I ran malwarebytes anti-malware and found some stuff, second time around (i.e. after SAS) found nothing.

Still redirecting, I looked at my hijackthis.log and think maybe something's up with my 09 and 020 but too inexperienced to know for sure.

    Thanks for the great resource.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You are pretty far out of date with your definitions for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. Please run them again (one at a time) and first make sure you update. Then run new scans, fix what they find, save new logs, and attach these new logs.

Also your MGtools is way too incomplete to be useful. I will have you run it a different way at the end of the below. Make sure you allow it to finish running.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.
Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new logs from SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Sorry couldn't get to this sooner as I was out of town. Thanks again for all your professional assistance!!

So I followed your links and ran the updates, SAS seemed to not recognize that I had updated in the last 7 days, but I didn't follow their link as that crashed on me in the past.

Nothing found from SAS or MB, MGtools ran all night with no indication of finishing so I hope the log is useful. Avenger deleted a file as listed. CC cleaner deleted a few temps. And attached are my logs.

I do want to add that things have been running smoother with only infrequent and occasional trouble. There was a particular website that always triggered a mozilla crash and after an update this morning it was accessible. Doesn't seem possible for such a gradual disappearance of malware.

Hope these logs are complete enough to help. If you would like me to include a hijackthis log (in case my mgtools is still too incomplete) let me know.

It tells you right in the command prompt windows that opens when it finishes. A snapshot of what it looks like was given in the READ & RUN ME in the Using MGtools instructions. It did finish this time.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnnljk - nnnnljk.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Michael\Local Settings\Temp

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Then attach the new c:\MGlogs.zip file

I never deleted any temp files since switching to XP, I emptied my recycle bin afterwords, hope that's not a problem.

    Here's my log.

    THANKS!!:p

You're welcome. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
