hi. while using my mums laptop, i managed to pick up something nasty from a vid i tried to watch online...( no, it wasn't porn... it was a docu. about US debt...) anyway...

i noticed msa.exe running and google told me that it was an arse, so followed instructions i found on
    www.xp-vista.com/spyware-removal/msantivirus-ms-antivirus-removal-instructions

i didn't dl and use the SpyHunter utility that was mentioned there, hoping that the spybot search and destroy already on the machine might do the same job. i removed all the things listed on the page that were actually on the machine as instructed... but the problem was still there, so i ended up here at majorgeeks, and followed the instructions on the read&run sticky for cleaning vista systems...

i didn't run cccleaner but other than that i think i followed the instructions to the letter... BUT... after running malwarebytes things just got worse... endless error messages popping up made it impossible to run combofix without touching the machine... it did run in the end, after i cleared 100 odd errors out of the way... but, now when i try to unzip rootrepeal, the computer wont let me. when i try to open txt files or log files or do anything, the computer won't let me.

before i just had virus warnings every couple of seconds. now NOTHINGWORKS. mbam buggered the machine totally. i noted down the errors and what i had done in a txt file that i now can't access... i've got all the logs but can do nothing with them... i'm sending this from another machine but will try another post from the infected machine now to see if i can attach the useless logs and notes...any help would be greatly appreciated...i promised my mum that i wouldn't mess her machine up...oops..

ok... i rebooted again... not sure but i think maybe it did work... i've reactivated the resident shield, and i'm getting no more virus warnings... yay... and now the error messages have stopped too, and i can access files again... and i can unzip rootrepeal and everything... yay... maybe i panicked one reboot too soon... thanks to all for the cleanup thread, and for the groovy site... majorgeeks rock...
