Hard Drive Repair

I'm looking for a software review or recommendation for a hard drive repair utility. I'm using XP-Pro and in the middle of a scandisk processing an error occurred. Now within XP the drive is not viewable... except in hard drive manager. When I do a chkdsk within a DOS window it shows an error in file number 25 blah blah blah.... So I know the drive still has data that should be able to be retrieved.

Is there a software utility available for this type of file error or i/o error???
Or, should I just break-down and go to a hard drive recovery company to get my data back?

So post the make or look here
