Having trouble displaying pc picture to tv picture

Hi all
Just brought a pc to tv converter. It came with a sound adaptor which wnet directly from sound port on laptop to red and white sockets on tv. I then tries connecting s video lead to laptop but didn't have a s video socket so i brought a adaptor which went from VGA to s-video. This then went directly into the tv. I then pressed presentation mode on laptop and it found the tv so i clicked on the laptop to tv setting. Then the tv flashed and showed a small black and white flickering picture of my current laptop screen. I could just see the mouse moving around the screen on the tv. Is there any way of resolving this and making the picture 5 times as big?
