Hello, and a big Thank You! in advance for any help offered. I am posting in regards to one of my family members computers that I'm trying to clean a virus or malware off of.

The first signs of malware that I was told about was that a window had popped up on the desktop that basically said the computer was infected and would list off all kinds of scary sounding infections. As far as I know the window was never clicked on or anything as we assumed it was some kind of "scareware" or other malware. We tried running avg free and we found some trojan horse infections:

    Generic19.xdp (found twice)
    SHeur3.BCHV
    Downloader.Generic10.ump (found 5 times)
    Downloader.Generic_C.BQI (found 3 times)

AVG said it moved those to the virus vault. Over the next couple of days the problems didn't really seem to go away, so I found these forums and followed the "Read and Run me first" guide. The logs are attached below.

The only real problems I encountered was that Malwarebytes wouldn't update at all, so I manually downloaded the updates. Even now after running through the guide I still get an error when I try to update it. The error is: MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (12007, 0, WinHttpSendRequest).

I also had to use the alternate start for SuperAntiSpyware.

After going through the guide I found that I cannot get into windows safe mode via msconfig, as in the boot tab all of the boot options are "greyed out" and unclickable or uncheckable. I can get into safemode by hitting F8 at startup though.

I also just checked my AVG logs before posting this thread and it found some more infections on 10/4/10, so I'll attach that log as well.

Thats all I can think of right now :) Thank you again for any help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Not problems! Cookies are nothing to be concerned with and System Volume Information is just the System Restore folder which can only be fixed by toggling System Restore to disabled and then back to enabled which we will do in final instructions.

ComboFix took care of your TDSS infection and SUPERAntiSpyware removed a DNS hijacker. We only have some minor details to attend to.

You need to update from Mozilla Firefox (3.0.19) to the current version as this very outdated version is a security risk and should be uninstalled. Current version is here: Mozilla FireFox

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Do not run any scans with AVG right now since it would just be a waste of time. After I have you perform final instructions which also toggles system restore, you can then run AVG. But we will get to this later if all is good now.

Thanks for the quick response! I downloaded and installed the latest version of Firefox (3.6.10) as you asked me to.

I did receive a success message after running the fixme.reg file.

I also attached the new mglogs.zip file.

The only thing we've noticed lately is that avg will pop up asking about a tracking cookie.Tribalfusion. It asks to allow or ignore it kind of thing. I'm not as worried about that since you also stated that cookies aren't too big of a deal. I only mention it because it's the only thing sort of abnormal happening since we last posted :)

    Thanks again!

Just ignore cookies. See step 12 (for more info on cookies) in the link at the end of the below final instructions since your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
